Lee Wrights: Patriot Act renewal gives terrorists another victory

by R. Lee Wrights

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and thus clamorous to be led to safety), by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”
– H.L. Mencken

BURNET, Texas (June 1) – Using the same tactics of secrecy, deceit, outright lies and fear that they have been using for ten years, Democrats and Republicans steamrolled over the opposition and stampeded Congress into renewing several provisions of the Patriotic Act last week. Once again, both Democrats and Republicans dishonored their oath of office and voted for a bill that will continue to erode the freedom and liberty of all Americans. Thanks to Congress, score another victory for every terrorist in the world who seeks to destroy the land of the free and home of the brave.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid even went so far as to accuse Sen. Rand Paul of wanting to put “guns in the hands of terrorists” for daring to offer amendments to the law to protect the liberties of Americans. Sen. Paul had better be careful, because such actions could be construed by federal prosecutors as giving “material aide” to terrorists under the Patriot Act.

At the same time the bipartisan leadership was ram-rodding this bill through the Senate, war-hawks in the House of Representatives were quietly voting to give the president the power to take our country to war anywhere in the world, at any time, without further congressional authorization. In a typical tactic used when politicians fear a public outcry, they buried this grant of monarchical power to the president in a defense appropriation bill.

America has became a nation of “knocking knees, sweating foreheads, and folks who jump too high at any sound,” as James Bovard noted in his book “Attention Deficit Democracy.” What is worse yet is that the ruling elites of our country in both major parties support and encourage this fear at every opportunity in order to consolidate and expand their power.

Terrorism does indeed pose a greater threat to freedom and liberty today than at any time in history, before or after Sept. 11, 2001. But the threat isn’t caused by any plan or action of any foreign terrorist. The greatest threat posed by terrorism is being engineered by the very people who we elect to protect our rights here at home.

The Patriot Act is, in fact, one of the greatest victories the terrorists have achieved. The original bill was the direct result of a grand manipulation of fear after the horrific events of 9/11. By killing only a few thousand citizens the terrorists achieved exactly what they set out to do. With one horrendous act of mass murder they were able to send untold millions into such a panic that they have turned their backs on the very things this great country was founded and built upon.

While we still remember and mourn the deaths of the 3,000 people killed in the first tragedy of 9/11, Americans have sadly forgotten the two victims of the second tragedy. Lying buried beneath the tons of stone and steel that once was the World Trade Center, along with thousands of innocent Americans killed, were those precious American siblings — Liberty and Freedom.

The first tragedy of 9/11 was so terrible and so horrific that most Americans have completely ignored the second, which is like tremors following a major earthquake. Unfortunately, these perpetual aftershocks are causing more damage than the quake itself. And sadly, the damage will increase so long as we continue to ignore the real threat to our liberty — the fear that causes us to sacrifice everything we hold dear upon the altar of a false god called National Security.

The most dangerous threat to our beloved freedom and liberty is allowing the fear of the world to blind us to the terror we face at home. We have become a nation in a perpetual state of war, where our leaders routinely and casually dishonor their oaths of office, and disregard the fundamental law of the land, the U.S. Constitution. A country where the people complacently and sheepishly accept every limit on their freedom and liberty is a nation that is doomed to destruction — just what the terrorists wanted all along.

R. Lee Wrights, 52, a libertarian writer and political activist, is seeking the presidential nomination because he believes the Libertarian message in 2012 must be a loud, clear and unequivocal call to stop all war. To that end he has pledged that 10 percent of all donations to his campaign will be spent for ballot access so that the stop all war message can be heard in all 50 states. Wrights is a lifetime member of the Libertarian Party and co-founder and editor of of the free speech online magazine Liberty For All. Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., he now lives and works in Texas.

Have you donated to this campaign yet ? Remember ten percent will go to help the LP gain ballot access. You may give up to $5,000 to a POTUS campaign ($2,500 for pre-convention plus $2,500 for the general election). Some can spare the maximum. A good thing is to GIVE until it feels GOOD !!!

Agree completely, but attacks on the Patriot Act have gained little traction with the average American. Why? Because the limits on liberty are mostly theoretical. There haven’t been dozens of abuses heaped on innocent people. Those affected have “deserved it” in the eyes of many. By the time the government gets around to arresting libertarians and other anti-statists, it will be too late (I’m sure the tactics of the gestapo were ignored until the kindly neighbor was arrested) but that’s human nature. People are too busy with their lives to respond to “those wacko Libertarians crying “wolf.” We haved to overcome the “wacko” image in order to get anyone to listen. As I’ve said before, that can only be done through LP groups active and integrated into local communities.

Wayne (Root), you are a pig. – Robert Milnes // May 3, 2011 at 5:31 am on IPR

” In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I don’t shrink from this responsibility – I welcome it.” – President John F. Kennedy

“Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear. It has kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor, with the cry of grave national emergency. Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it.” — General Douglas MacArthur, 1957

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President Right or Wrong, is not only Unpatriotic and Servile, but is Morally Treasonable to the American Public.”– Former Republican President, Theodore Roosevelt”

Why haven’t we, as a party, asked Wayne (Root) to simply join one of the war parties? – Karen Kwiatkowski

I also think, that beyond the fleas the LP gets from lying down with characters like Root, and promoting him, we should be careful about our other bedfellows in DC. The Cato Institute does fine work, but it is not as effective in gaining Libertarian friendly legislation and votes as is Jim Babka’s interactive and aggressive DownsizeDC, and nothing Cato has produced on constitutional foreign or domestic policy comes even close to what is done daily over at the Bumper Hornberger’s Future of Freedom Foundation in Reston, VA. – Karen Kwiatkowski

…, did any libertarian really believe that the GOP was going to make any significant cuts in government spending? These lying authoritarians have been talking about small government all my life and they have yet to demonstrate this by any actual action. -Tom Blanton

If he doesn’t get the nod for this party now, then whomever we send out will be a joke. His whole campaign is to remind us to be human. Beauty.

@7 It is June 1, 2011. Let’s let this race develop some before we close it down, please. Each candidate is promoting the LP to some degree, that helps build the local groups where it can grow as a national voice. I support EACH candidate until the convention, then I decide on the WHOLE campaign merits of each !!!

Actually, there may have been thousands of abuses that are unknown because they are being kept secret.

    Declan McCullagh writes:

The U.S. Congress has approved a four-year extension of the Patriot Act despite warnings from senators that the Justice Department has twisted the 2001 law into a “secret” surveillance mechanism far broader than Americans realize.

“I believe that when more of my colleagues and the American public come to understand how the Patriot Act has actually been interpreted in secret, they will insist on significant reforms too,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who tried to block the renewal. Sen. Mark Udall, a Colorado Democrat, offered a similar warning.

The cautionary note from two members of the Senate Intelligence committee — who are briefed on classified activities and are tasked with overseeing the NSA, CIA, and the Justice Department’s “intelligence activities” — is highly unusual, and perhaps even unprecedented.

I guess these wacko Senators are just crazy conspiracy theorists making this stuff up. On the other hand, because they are Democrats going against their own party’s regime, it is likely they know something we don’t.

It may be that the PATRIOT Act is far worse than anyone thought, despite the fact that it was widely reported last year that the FBI was abusing National Security Letters.

What we have here is Mr. Wrights attempting to lead by getting in front of an issue as opposed to following the crowd and then pretending to lead by merely validating and exploiting what the crowd already believes.

The whole idea is to move public opinion in a libertarian direction. It is unfortunate that the “libertarian” with the largest megaphone does not understand this concept and prefers to follow a small crowd of right-wingers who enjoy bigoted diatribes and attacks on politicians for things that aren’t even real.

  9. Tom Blanton

By the way, for those unfamiliar with Declan McCullagh, he is a fairly moderate minarchist libertarian and has been since at least 1997. He writes for a broad “tech-savvy” audience on CNET and formerly CBS and he probably does actually help move society in a libertarian direction without the “strategic” pandering to the left or the right.

Wow, what an insightful and excellent statement.
