Because of the resignation of Wayne Allyn Root, there is now an opening for an At-Large Representative on the Libertarian National Committee. The candidates for the position have been asked to write a 2-page letter of why they would like to be on the LNC. They will be voted on at the next meeting, this November in Washington DC. IPR would like to feature the letters ahead of the meeting. This way, our readers can get to know about the choices and can take an opportunity to contact their Regional Reps and the Executive Committee of the candidate they’d like to see elected.

“They will be voted on at the next meeting, this November in Washington DC. ”

    Sure about that?

Gary E Johnson took over as Chair of Travis County Libertarian Party in 1981 after I stepped down as Chair to move back to California. He is a long-time Libertarian and very committed to the success of The Libertarian Party.

Mr. Johnson, there’s currently discussion of whether it’s okay for the LNC to make this vote for the replacement rep as being kept secret. How would you feel about that, if you were currently on the LNC?

Gary Johnson has now sent an additional statement to the LNC. I’ll try to post it as an article later, or hopefully other IPR writers will get to it if I don’t.

In the meantime here it is as a comment.

Gary for Secretary: Tanned, Rested, and Ready!

    To the National Committee,

The upcoming vote for secretary may seem like deja vu. After running for an at large vacancy, I am running for secretary.

So, why am I running? And why should you vote for me now if you did not vote for me last time?

This election is not the same. This time is different.

This is about more than replacing Ruth Bennett’s vote on the National Committee. This is about more than which faction has more support. This is about a job. That job is the job of national secretary.

Yes, I know what the national secretary does. I did it.

I have been the recording officer of the Party. I performed the duties. During my term I attended all meetings of the National Committee and the national convention. I kept the minutes and records.

I know what reports are required by the Bylaws, the Convention Rules, and the Policy Manual. I prepared them. I conducted LNC roll call votes. I counted national convention ballots. I posted approved minutes and notices. I calculated the apportionment of delegates and alternates from each state and D.C. to the national convention. Been three, done that.

I know all about mail ballots. When I was national secretary, mail ballots were by mail. Not e-mail, mail.

    My record speaks for itself.

And I am still doing it. I am the secretary of my state and county parties.

And, by the way: No, my activities at the state and local level will not prevent me from performing the duties of national secretary. When I served as national secretary, I was simultaneously the secretary of my state and county parties, then.

Before I was secretary, I served on the LNC for 4 terms as a regional representative and 2 terms at large. I had perfect attendance for those 15 years. I have more years of experience on the National Committee than all of my opponents, combined.

And I did not just show up at the meetings. I served, for example, on the Advertising and Publications Review Committee, the Ballot Access Committee, and the Mailing List Committee. For a couple of years, I wrote the press releases for the national party and spoke on behalf of the party to reporters and radio talk shows.

This election is not about “stopping” the “enemy” from having a seat at the table. This is not about filling an at-large vacancy. This time really is different. It is about electing the secretary.
