Libertarian Party to host rally to bring Uber and Lyft to Birmingham

null

Birmingham Business Journal:

The Libertarian Party of Alabama has announced it will host a rally to bring ride-hailing services to Birmingham.

The event – that will seek to raise awareness and support for companies such as Uber and Lyft to come to Birmingham – will be held Friday, July 31 at Birmingham City Hall, according to the party’s Facebook page.

The event post says: “It’s clear that Birminghamians remain unhappy with their city’s leadership. On Thursday, Art Carden, an economics professor at Samford University, wrote a scathing op-ed criticizing the city’s taxi problems. He mentioned many of the same critiques that have been leveled against the city’s transportation system (cabs in particular) since the uproar began in the summer of 2014.”

The rally will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Amy O’Dell How did it go? I was working and couldn’t make it.

Libertarian Party of Alabama We had a small turnout, but got some media coverage!

Paulie Cannoli Let me know if anyone has links to the coverage .. I’d like to compile them in an article

Paulie Cannoli We had more reporters than protesters or about even .. fun!

Paulie Cannoli Also the president of the city council came out, said he agrees with us and so does most of the council and Uber is coming to Bham soon but he doesn’t know how soon

Paulie Cannoli Oh…and he got a ticket while talking to us

Paulie Cannoli Notes for future events:

    Paulie Cannoli 1) Signs!

Paulie Cannoli 2) Promote and remind thru more than just FB. Calls, emails, meetup, etc.

Paulie Cannoli 3) Anything at city hall – we need to specify which side of the building

Paulie Cannoli 4) Tuesdays are apparently the best days for doing things at city hall as that is when they meet and many interested citizens attend

Paulie Cannoli Great job for a first outing tho…

Interesting side note, I helped get Art Carden stated as a libertarian activist back when he was an undergrad at Alabama and I was the county/region LP chair here back in the late 90s, I organized the student group at UA and he was out student group president. He’s back in Alabama now as a professor at a private university in Birmingham.

It’s clear that Birminghamians remain unhappy with their city’s leadership. On Thursday, Art Carden, an economics professor at Samford University, wrote a scathing op-ed criticizing the city’s taxi problems. He mentioned many of the same critiques that have been leveled against the city’s transportation system (cabs in particular) since the uproar began in the summer of 2014.

But one simple sentence stands out as the most important and most effective argument for opening Birmingham up for app-based ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft:

“Resistance to innovation hurts the Birmingham brand.”

It’s time to make the Birmingham City Council listen to its constituents.

Join us as we rally to bring Uber and Lyft to Birmingham!
