The Green Party of the United States has endorsed the Global Climate March to take place in cities around the world on Sunday, Nov. 29, to press world leaders meeting in Paris from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11 to agree on a far-reaching deal to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
The primary march was planned for Paris, until Parisian authorities canceled it for security reasons in the aftermath of the Nov. 13 attacks (http://350.org/global-climate-march).
The Global Climate March, organized by Avaaz (https://secure.avaaz.org/en/event/globalclimatemarch), will challenge the leaders of 190-plus nations meeting at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) to achieve a legally binding global agreement on post-2020 action to offset the advancing climate crisis.
“Ratification of a legally binding deal by every nation is absolutely urgent, after the U.S. undermined the Kyoto Protocols and national leaders failed to agree on a legally binding treaty at the 2009 Copenhagen summit,” said Audrey Clement, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States and co-chair of the party’s Eco-Action Committee.
State and local Green Parties intend to participate in events throughout the U.S. on Nov. 29, including a march in Washington, D.C., sponsored by 350.org. At least 2,173 events are planned for more than 150 countries on Nov. 28 and 29.
Global Greens, an alliance of the world’s Green parties, will be represented in Paris during the summit (https://www.globalgreens.org).
U.S. Greens attending the summit will include Sanda Everette, co-chair of the national party, and Jill Stein, 2012 candidate for the Green presidential nomination.
“I look forward to participating with European Greens at their Climate Finance seminar (http://www.greens-efa.eu/climate-finance-seminar-14557.html) as well as other events hosted by Global Greens,” said Ms. Everette.
“The attack on civilians in Paris on Nov. 13 should remind us of the kind of dire security threat that global warming will pose in the coming decades. Unless the crisis is averted, we’ll see widespread societal breakdown and strife as famine, flooding, droughts, extreme weather, and mass displacement of populations increase throughout the world,” said Charles Ostdiek, co-chair of the Green Party.
