During last night’s Libertarian Presidential debate broadcast on Fox Business, John McAfee repeated his contention that the US and China are at war. I haven’t found a clip that isolates this comment and don’t currently foresee having time to find it amongst all the footage of the entire debate, nor have I watched the clip above from October of last year. However, its title (“China Is At War With Us”) matches what he is on video saying in the debate.
While neither nation has to my knowledge formally declared war on the other, it is worth noting that both countries are nuclear powers as well as having among the largest conventional military forces in the world, so any prospect of a war between the two of them could well be of concern to people in every part of the world.
If anyone reading finds the timestamp in the debate video where McAfee says the US and China are already at war, please post it in the comments. The post may be revised, schedules permitting, with that information if and when it is found. If I fail to get back to it, other IPR writers are encouraged to revise it in my stead.

So sorry WTF… BTW I hope the PRC is not watching.
Please, call me Tang-Fu, or Mr. Wang. And I would think all of us would be in deep doo doo, as you put it, if Mr. McAfee is right.

…Among other things.
Wang- are you in deep doo doo if McAfee is right? How closely are you monitored by the PRC?
I think McAfee verges on Trump territory here. Much like the Mexican government doesn’t know what Trump’s paranoia is all about and why Trump blames them, China wouldn’t understand McAfee’s paranoia. Don’t we have missiles that can reach China? Don’t we have technically trained spies in our government agencies too? Would we be concerned if China and Canada had a free trade agreement, where prices are raised for China’s benefit, where an “international” Chinese-based tribunal has precedence over Canadian law?
McAfee (and Trump for that matter) should probably listen to the half of Jefferson’s statement they missed, “Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations…”
By itself, “cyberwarfare” is more a criminal activity than a form of warfare, especially if the two countries at issue are not otherwise involved in political or military confilcts. It is a criminal activity even if waged by government agents – governments are capable of acting in a criminal manner.
Cyberwarfare may be used in preparation for actual conflict, or alongside other forms of warfare. And two countries with fundamentally different views on the issue of human rights as China and the USA should be concerned with the possibilities of the philosophical conflict leading to escalation of other conflicts.
Americans should for example be aware of this story:”China’s top new long-range missile ‘may be deployed this year’, putting US in striking distance” from the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong) http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/1931652/chinas-top-new-long-range-missile-may-be-deployed-year
Cyberwarfare is warfare.
That may be what he meant but it’s not what he said. Maybe it is what he says in the video above but I haven’t had time to watch it, I just went with the title. In the debate he stated plainly that the US and China are at war, period. He did not say cyberwar.
I could be wrong but I believe Mr. McAfee is referencing Cyber Warfare. Cyber security is certainly an area he would have a degree of expertise. So trying to focus as much attention as possible on Cyber threats and security would be playing to his strength.
Commenting to subscribe (that statement was among the more bizarre claims made in the debate).
