Libertarian National Committee June 4, 2023 Meeting Liveblog

This report will be a liveblog.

People are logging in.  The new Region 3 alternate is Greg Hertzsch.  They await the appearance of the chair.  Adrian Malagon is the new Region 4 representative.  Chair has appeared.

Attendance is taken. Nekhaila, Banner, Dassing, and Tuniewicz are absent. The staff member present is Lainie Huston.

public comment: Nathan Madden reports that there is a Bylaws amendment to raise the sustaining membership to $85 from $25. We are advised by the Secretary, who is Chair of the Bylaws Committee, that the bylaws amendment is actually for $50.

Speaker asks for support to the CRM, even if you do not support the LNC.

There are many other public comments.

Moved to approve the May 17 Special Meeting minutes. Approved without objection.

Ballot Access: There is an extended report by Dustin Nanna. Arkansas is the most immediate target. Many states are discussed. In one case there is uncertainty because there is litigation ongoing. North Dakota is discussed. $5 per signature is mentioned as a number.

Need to fill a vacancy of the convention oversight committee. An LNC member is needed. COC report given. Members for the Memorial Committee are needed. Mr. Hertsch is appointed.

Parliamentarian has issue. Issue in finding parliamentarians to help states having issues, the way CAH and Mr. Jacobs have already done. If state wants to change bylaws, having parliamentarians on retainer to give advice might be good. Alternative: just supply list of parliamentarians with experience with political parties who would be available pro bono or at a reduced rate. States would negotiate. Alternative: list of topics that need to be taken into account for possible inclusion in new bylaws.

Membership of APRC discussed. One or two items a day need review, within four hours.

It is remarkable how much time is being consumed by Caryn Ann Harlos talking without being recognized by the Chair.

A discussion of affiliate links to influencers. These are, I think, tracking links to indicate who raised money for the party.

Simplified version of issue: A policy manual contract change to sort out differences between employees and contractors, and would forbid putting contractors in charge of employees. Contractors are not employees and should not be treated as employees. There are legal issues here. Executive Director says we are already doing this. Motion passes 12-0-2.

Topic: Reallocate affiliate support budget — $10,000 — to activism general expense. We have financial limits and having a presence at Freedom Fest — court major donors — and PorcFest — recruit new members, get information from supporters –will be advantageous. Discussing Freedom Fest, the chair said, needs executive session to discuss last visit. Motion passes 12-0-2.

Advance to a discussion of the Strategic Plan. I was away for a few moments.

Chair: Would like to run as many candidate as last time, but elect more of them. Concentrate resources. Identify races where candidates ran unopposed last time.

Members: Time and money of members is scarce. At Reno members wanted, e.g., run local candidates. Members want less internet and more in person effort, and avoid meetings that do not move the needle. Political success will come from personal success. Work is the currency of the party. That was the Mises Caucus position. Big national events are good. Supporting local events is good.

Observation, Harlos and Malagon — there are local races in which there are no candidates or only one candidate. There are places to run candidates.

Redpath: We should run as many nonembarrassing candidates at all levels as possible. We have been the most successful minor party in the last half century.

CAH: The best thing we can do as the national party is to put out a good libertarian message. The national party should focus on winnable issues, especially those that are about to win anyhow. We get victories.

Ford: Supports what was said so far. State parties should focus on their state’s issues. We should work on ballot access, ballot access, and financial stability.

Rufo: 12 local candidates who win is better than 1% in a statewide race. National can help local people to win.

Ford: Tread very lightly in telling states what issues to use.

Redpath: Most candidates will only run for the post for which they want to run.

They advance to the Executive Committee meeting, which is not in executive session.

$21,000 for Arkansas ballot access drive and up to $4000 for ballot access litigation in Tennessee. Question if TN is completely enthusiastic about the proposal.

Ford: What are the disbursal plans for the $21,000?

We are splitting the money so the Arkansas party can, as they requested, generate the matching funds more smoothly. State chair Pakko reports $4 per signature is available. Some concern that the LNC does not want to duplicate their experience last year with New York. There will be fundraising for ballot access but the transfers are not conditioned on it. Motion passes 6-0-0.

Birthday wishes to several members are given. Executive CommitteeMeeting adjourned.

What, the disbursal ray didn’t spray galactic credits or some other currency everywhere, pushing entire planetary economies into hyper-inflation and collapse?

Amusingly in the old Commando Cody Sky Marshal of the Universe TV show, his spaceship had a disbursal Ray, when a dispersal ray was needed.

“Fixed, though I may have initially quoted him correctly.”

You probably did. Over the years I’ve noticed the erroneous “dispersed” used many times in e.g. LNC email list messages, minutes, etc. And it’s not just in the LP by any means. I just tend to notice it there more because I don’t follow the activities of the Audobon Society, Odd Fellows, and so on.

Pet peeve (not just at IPR, but for some reason this seems especially common in LP circles):

    To “disperse” is to scatter.

The word people are looking for is “disburse” (to pay out).

IIRC there was a meeting in Executive Session not too long ago to develop a list of parliamentarians to recommend to states. There was some discussion of whether this needed to be in Executive Session on Facebook, in which Jonathan Jacobs took an active part. It doesn’t seem like this should be a difficult thing to do.
