The Libertarian Party of Illinois announced this week that its Executive Board has selected James Humay to serve as its new Chair. The position had been filled by the party’s Vice Chair in an acting capacity since December.
The party shared the announcement on social media on Wednesday, noting in a separate post that its Executive Board had met that evening. Humay also serves as the Chair of the Libertarian Party of Chicago and has previously been a candidate for public office, running for Cook County Board of Commissioners in both 2024 and 2022.
Vice Chair Matt Piron had been acting as Chair since December, stepping into the role after former Chair Bill Redpath resigned in mid-December. According to the party, officers are elected biennially to oversee the activities of the party’s Board of Directors and State Central Committee. The Chair also presides over monthly Board meetings and quarterly meetings of the Central Committee.
Redpath was initially elected Chair to fill an earlier vacancy during a special meeting of the party’s Executive Board in 2023. In December, the party announced that it would not be holding a state convention in 2025, opting instead to meet in April 2026. This suggests that Humay will likely serve as Chair through that period.
SO ILL PHIL — had there been any active chapters south of I-80, this would have been prevented. All of the active chapters at this time are in Chicagoland and Northern Illinois.
Most of the Central and Southern Illinois chapters dissolved after what happened at the Reno national convention in 2022. Some are seeking to reorganize, but that likely won’t be until 2026 at the earliest when the state convention makes its long-overdue return to Springfield.
As per usual, Chicago-based politicians, even in minor parties, dictating the rest of the state. It’s a shame they couldn’t pull someone from Little Egypt
