Four members of the Green Party of the United States have won election to municipal office since the start of May. Candidates successfully ran for seats in Oregon, Massachusetts, and California.
The four were the only identified Green Party candidates on the ballot anywhere since the start of the month. All ran in nonpartisan elections. The GPUS Elections Database defines recognized Green candidates as individuals who are members of their state Green Party organizations and not affiliated with any other political party.
Abe Currin won a second four-year term this past Tuesday to the Blue Mountain Community College Board of Education in Oregon’s Umatilla County. He ran unopposed, with unofficial results reporting that he received 1,093 votes. He was first elected to the position in 2021. Meanwhile, Brian Powers was also reelected that same day without opposition to the fifth director seat on the Hubbard Rural Fire Protection District board in Marion County. Powers, who was first elected in 2021, earned 236 votes according to unofficial results and will serve another four-year term.
Nearly two weeks earlier, on May 10, one Green candidate was elected in Massachusetts. David Spanagel won election to the Board of Library Trustees in Littleton for the first time. Results show that he earned 901 votes in a two-way race for two seats. While not an incumbent in this race, Spanagel is a longtime Green officeholder, having previously been elected ten times in the nearby town of Lancaster, including to positions as library trustee and town moderator.
Earlier this month, Independent Political Report wrote that four other Green Party candidates had won office since the start of 2025, including three incumbents and one new officeholder. In that article, IPR reported there was a possible fifth victory from the May 6 election in California, pending official certification expected later in the month. That final result, for Jazmin Ronquillo, has since been certified, confirming her first-time election to the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council in Los Angeles.
At least one more Green Party candidate is expected on the ballot next month. John Proctor is running in a 10-way race for five seats on the New Augusta City Council in Mississippi. The position is nonpartisan. Following the 2024 election cycle, the Green Party reported having 163 elected officials across the United States.
Hi, at least two more Greens have been elected in May and June 2025 elections (in HI and MS), with reports expected soon on several others in ME.
