The Democratic Socialists of America has reported 12 wins from the 2025 election cycle, with two additional endorsed candidates advancing to December runoff contests. The organization has endorsed 23 candidates since the start of the year.
The Democratic Socialists has maintained a running list of 2025 endorsements throughout the cycle, with 12 candidates elected so far, including 11 on the November 4 general election ballot and one earlier in the year. The organization’s strongest performances came in New York, where four endorsed candidates were elected to office. The group is also awaiting results in two Jersey City Council races in New Jersey, where Joel Brooks in Ward B and Jake Ephros in Ward D each received more than 20% of the vote and will proceed to the city’s December 2 runoff elections.
Among the DSA’s most prominent victories was the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City. Mamdani appeared on both the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, giving the latter party its strongest mayoral showing in city history. The organization has called his win a “decisive victory” for the Democratic Socialist movement, crediting thousands of members nationwide who contributed to his campaign.
“Through Zohran’s victory, the people defeated the oligarchy; the working class defeated major corporations; Democratic Socialism defeated the Democratic Party status quo,” the DSA’s National Political Committee said in a post-election statement.
While the Democratic Socialists of America is not a third party in the conventional sense, operating primarily within the Democratic Party, it has frequently acknowledged its quasi-party status and has taken recent moves to function more independently. Earlier this year, delegates at the DSA’s bi-annual national convention approved a resolution describing the organization as a “party surrogate, acting as a party but without a dedicated ballot line” which “fights on unfavorable terrain and is pulled between the necessity of independent political action and using the ballot line of the Democratic Party.” As part of the resolution, it would work toward moving away from the Democratic Party ballot line and consider independent campaigns aimed at building a “working-class party.”
