Libertarian Party of Wisconsin Endorses Massie Bill Calling for U.S. Withdrawal From NATO

The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin is endorsing Rep. Thomas Massie’s proposed legislation that would direct the president to initiate the formal process of withdrawing the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, calling the move a “common sense” decision and urging state lawmakers to join in support.

In a December 16 statement, the party said it “proudly endorses” the legislation, which it said is necessary due to concerns the alliance has transformed into “a costly, provocative, and unconstitutional entanglement.” The bill was proposed by Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, and asserts that NATO’s Cold War-era mission no longer aligns with current U.S. interests. It argues that European member states are capable of providing for their own defense and would prohibit the use of taxpayer funds for NATO’s common budgets.

The party’s statement follows a similar call to leave NATO made earlier in the month by Steven Nekhaila, chair of the Libertarian National Committee, on behalf of the national organization.

“Created in 1949 to contain a Soviet Union that no longer exists, NATO is now more a drain on American taxpayers than a deterrent to aggressors overseas,” the Wisconsin party’s statement reads. “Instead, the lopsided alliance has inflamed tensions, prolonged conflicts, and repeatedly put Americans’ and other allies’ lives and resources on the line in a game of military ‘chicken’ that often costs us relationships and resources rather than wins new partnerships.”

The party accused the alliance of financially burdening the United States for decades, arguing that the nation has shouldered a disproportionate share of NATO’s military and fiscal responsibilities. It said that despite repeated pledges by member nations to increase defense spending, more than a third of NATO countries continue to fall short of agreed-upon levels, leaving U.S. taxpayers, specifically Wisconsin families, to absorb much of the cost.

It also raised concerns about NATO’s Article 5, which states that an attack against one member is regarded as an attack against all members of the alliance. The party denounced the provision as an erosion of the Constitution that could allow foreign governments to draw the United States into a war without an appropriate congressional declaration. It further referred to the clause as a loophole “that advances the imperial presidency.”

“Wisconsin taxpayers should not be forced to bankroll wealthy European governments,” Reese Wood, chair of the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin, said in the statement. “Wisconsin families should not be forced to pay the price—financial or human—for wars ignited by Brussels bureaucrats. And Wisconsin National Guard troops should never be deployed to police foreign borders.”

The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin is calling on the state’s congressional delegation to co-sponsor and vote for Massie’s NATO Act in the interest of “meaningful, strategic defense,” arguing that withdrawal would reduce overseas military spending, refocus resources where they are most needed, encourage more diplomatic approaches to foreign policy, and restore Congress’ war-making authority.

It’s good to know that everything in Wisconsin is fixed and that the state LP no longer needs to focus on local and statewide issues.
