Libertarian National Committee Appoints Steven Nekhaila as Temporary IALP Representative

The Libertarian National Committee has designated party Chair Steven Nekhaila as the Libertarian Party’s temporary representative to the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties Congress, granting him full authority to act on the party’s behalf at the organization’s upcoming meeting.

The International Alliance of Libertarian Parties is a global network of independent libertarian parties founded in 2015, with member organizations pursuing their own national strategies while coordinating on shared priorities where possible. The Libertarian Party is a full member of the alliance and holds a seat on its Congress, though that seat has been vacant.

A motion to designate the LNC chair position as the temporary representative to the alliance was co-sponsored by Nekhaila earlier this month, with an electronic ballot closing on January 27. A simple majority was required for passage. As of publication, 11 LNC members voted in favor of the resolution, with Andrew Chadderdon voting against it and Otto Dassing abstaining. Four votes had not yet been publicly reported, though the threshold for approval has been met.

Nekhaila first disclosed last year that the alliance was planning to convene as part of broader reunification and reorganization efforts, which he said were reignited under Argentine President Javier Milei. In a public statement, Nekhaila reported that the group had voted to relocate from Switzerland to the United States and would pursue adopting a new constitution and bylaws in the coming months. He also said the alliance would begin using Libertarian International as a working name, though both names have continued to appear in recent updates.

Under the resolution, Nekhaila, in his capacity as chair, has been delegated full representational and participatory authority for all matters related to the IALP Congress, which is expected to meet around February 26, though additional public details have not yet been released. His authority includes the ability to propose constitutional amendments, submit nominations for the IALP Executive Committee, and cast votes on all business before the Congress, including changes to the alliance’s declaration of principles, branding decisions, membership applications, and Executive Committee elections.

The resolution requires Nekhaila to provide advance notice to the national committee of any constitutional amendments or nominations submitted ahead of the Congress, as well as to deliver a written report summarizing any votes cast following the meeting. His authority will automatically expire upon the conclusion of the February Congress unless explicitely renewed by the committee.

The International Alliance of Libertarian Parties has also recently appointed Lana Leguia as its new secretary general. Leguia serves as vice president of political affairs for the New Jersey Libertarian Party, is the state chapter leader for the Ladies of Liberty Alliance, and is a former Libertarian Party candidate for the U.S. House. Her appointment was made by the alliance’s Executive Committee.
