Prohibition Party Names Acting New Jersey Chair, Backs Minnesota Local Candidate

The Prohibition Party is reporting new state organizing activity in New Jersey and a local reelection campaign in Minnesota as the party continues its efforts to build in new states ahead of the 2028 presidential election cycle.

In the April edition of its newsletter, the New York Prohibition Party said Thomas Sorrentino has been appointed acting state chair for New Jersey to help organize a new state branch of the party. The newsletter said Sorrentino has experience in political organizing and campaigning in New Jersey, though it did not provide additional details about his prior work or involvement with the organization.

The newsletter also reported that Bruce Johnson is running for reelection as Dakota County Soil and Water District 4 supervisor in Minnesota with the Prohibition Party’s endorsement. The office is nonpartisan. In 2022, Johnson was elected without opposition, receiving 22,242 votes, according to Dakota County election results.

The party said that if Johnson wins, it would represent the first local election victory by a Prohibition Party candidate since Jim Hedges was reelected Thomson Township assessor in Pennsylvania in 2005.

The New Jersey and Minnesota updates come as the national Prohibition Party is also focused on ballot access efforts in Alaska and Tennessee. Earlier this year, the New York affiliate reported that the party had become a limited political party under Alaska law, which would allow it to place presidential electors on the ballot for the 2028 general election. The party previously said the Alaska effort required organizers to collect and submit at least 3,409 valid signatures.

In Tennessee, the national party has said it is pursuing a similar effort toward 2028 presidential ballot access, which would require 275 valid signatures and a slate of 11 presidential electors. Those electors would need to come from each of the state’s nine congressional districts, with the remaining two from any part of the state.

The Prohibition Party says it expects to hold a formal nominating convention sometime in 2027 to select a presidential ticket for the 2028 election cycle.

While the exact level of state party activity varies, its national organization currently lists representatives from Alabama, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
