Wayne Allyn Root: ‘The Conscience of a Libertarian’

Reason reports that Libertarian VP nominee Wayne Allyn Root will be releasing a new book in April:

The Conscience of a Libertarian… is modeled after Root’s hero Barry Goldwater and Goldwater’s all-time best-selling conservative book The Conscience of a Conservative.

Root said of his new book, “The Conscience of a Libertarian will honor the ideals of freedom and limited government as communicated by great political leaders such as Thomas Jefferson, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan and, most recently, Dr. Ron Paul. My views are simple- the government that governs least, governs best. I believe the constitution is clear- power does not belong to the government, or the politicians, or the career bureaucrats, or corporate interests, or lobbyists. It belongs to the American people. The day that I take office, I vow to dramatically cut government; to dramatically lower taxes; to dramatically increase freedom; to fight to make my own political office obsolete; to make government so small, you won’t even notice it’s missing; and, most importantly, to give power back to the people- where it belongs.”

Root said of his political future, “I want to thank great patriots and freedom-fighters like Libertarian Presidential candidate Bob Barr and Republican Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul for reinvigorating the modern- day Libertarian freedom movement. I would do anything, make any sacrifice, to move the freedom agenda forward. The media has called me “Ron Paul on steroids!” A quarter of a century from now, I’ll still be younger than Ron Paul is today. That’s a very good thing- the freedom movement can benefit from the unique combination of energy, passion and youthful enthusiasm that I bring to the table.”

What the hell: I hope Root runs for U.S. Senate as a Republican and wins. Even with his Islamophobic death crusade, he’s still better than every other Senator in every other regard, and less hawkish too. Oh, Root is a lying ahole — he’ll fit right in. In fact, he might be too honest and not quite corruptable enough.

Same with the odious Barr. I hope he runs for Senate in Georgia and wins.

Root won’t get 2012. He’s had enough visibility on this campaign to ever be considered by any but the most die-hard Reformist.

  3. darolew September 30, 2008

It’s too bad Root went into a career of fraud and politics (or do I repeat myself?). Root could have had a great career as a Unix sysadmin.

I’m not sure the book will be pro or anti-intervention.

I suspect the book will bear little relation to what Root actually believes about anything. Rather, I expect the book to reflect what Root thinks libertarians want to hear.

Root is positioning himself for 2012, because his ego is hungry. He wants to appear on TV and radio shows, and hopefully have his own show someday. So he’ll dish out boilerplate phrases, not because he believes them, but because he wants the adulation of crowds.

A hollow, creepy, egomaniac. I do wish he’d leave the LP alone and go pester some other party.

Well, I heard that Root said in his book that he planned on running as a Republican against Harry Reid in 2010. I was wondering if he is still covertly planning on that.

Root losing badly in a senate election one year before he starts campaigning for President…

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  7. Hugh Jass September 29, 2008

    Yes.

  8. Hugh Jass September 29, 2008

Is he still running for Senate in 2010 as a Republican?

  9. Trent Hill September 29, 2008

Of course it is, but the wrong man is writing it.

It would need to be someone who had a tad bit of mainstream credibility, but could still claim to hold the mantle of libertarianism, while representing all three wings—anarchists, minarchists, and Cato-ites.

Ron Paul would please a pretty good majority, but I cant think of anyone else.

I think that “Conscience of a Libertarian” is a good title for a book.

  11. Ayn R. Key September 29, 2008

What would Root know about “libertarian”?

    Or “conscience”?

  12. Mike Gillis September 29, 2008

Or… you could look at what steroids actually do to your body, especially what they do to your aggressiveness and your testicles.

So you could say that Wayne Allyn Root is Ron Paul as a war monger with no balls.

  13. Mike Gillis September 29, 2008

Me too. But he IS a media figure….sort of.

So it’s really true, in a bullshit sort of way. 🙂

  14. Mike Theodore September 29, 2008

“The media has called me “Ron Paul on steroids!””

I’ve only heard himself say that…

The Fed is about to make us all millionaires.

  16. Mike Gillis September 29, 2008

It makes sense to call the book “Millionaire Libertarian” as he is neither a millionaire or a libertarian.

  17. Jared September 29, 2008

When will Root be releasing Millionaire Libertarian?

  18. Darcy Richardson September 29, 2008

    Wayne Root has a conscience?

  19. G.E. Post author | September 29, 2008

I meant that the title was ugly.

  20. paulie cannoli September 29, 2008

I’m guessing the title. I don’t think any of us have read it yet.

  21. sunshinebatman September 29, 2008

Which parts of the book did you find fault with?

  22. G.E. Post author | September 29, 2008

    Patriot Nation = gag

  23. sunshinebatman September 29, 2008

Hey aparently, there are TWO new Barr books. This is from a new russ Venery msg:

    —–

I told Bob that I would require a few things for him.

First, I needed a campaign book that was extensive and made clear his libertarian values and how those solutions would put America back on the right track.

That book, Lessons in Liberty, will be available shortly on our web site.

I also asked Bob to put together another, personal book that explained how his beliefs have evolved over the years. I knew that I was asking for quite a bit but Bob delivered despite being consistently on the campaign trail since May.

Today, Bob’s personal book, Patriot Nation, was released and is available

  24. Ross Levin September 29, 2008

Chuck – I was just looking at your website, and the district that you ran for Congress in is the one I live in (unfortunately that means my parents voted against you…)!

  25. sunshinebatman September 29, 2008

Barr’s 2003 book “Meaning of Is…” is out of print but still available on line. It’s rather interesting… gets into Waco, how the Congressional leadership rigged the impeachment to fail, etc.

  26. svf September 29, 2008

I suspect his book will be pro-intervention, very militarist, and pro-state

Not if Root really thinks he’s destined to be the 2012 LP presidential nominee…

Therefore, it wont be widely read.

    That is a safe bet.

  27. Ross Levin September 29, 2008

    That great libertarian Ronald Reagan!

  28. G.E. Post author | September 29, 2008

It’s not just the party, but the word “libertarian” that is now dead.

    Thank you, Denver delegates.

  29. Trent Hill September 29, 2008

lol. I suspect his book will be pro-intervention, very militarist, and pro-state (I say that as a minarchist). Therefore, it wont be widely read.

Which is sad, I’d tried to convince others to write a book with the same title not too long ago.

  30. Mike Gillis September 29, 2008

More like Ron Popeil on steroids.
