Independence-Alliance Party and Forward Party of Minnesota Merge to Form Forward Independence

The Independence-Alliance Party of Minnesota and the Forward Party of Minnesota have formally merged to create a new political organization called Forward Independence. The agreement was finalized at separate but jointly held special conventions over the weekend in Maplewood.

In a press release shared directly with Independent Political Report, Independence-Alliance Chair Phil Fuehrer described the decision as “a merger of equals.” As previously reported, leaders from both groups had spent months exploring the details of a potential merger. The agreement brings the Forward Party, formerly operating as a political committee, into the recognized minor party structure of the Independence-Alliance Party.

The new party will be led jointly by Fuehrer and Bill Halter, the former Co-Chair of the Forward Party of Minnesota. The State Executive Committee has also been expanded to accommodate leadership from both sides and to better support the party’s strategic growth moving forward.

Forward Independence now serves as the Forward Party’s official affiliate in Minnesota, replacing the prior committee. However, the organization intends to maintain a “collaborative relationship” with the Alliance Party. Fuehrer previously told IPR he hopes to preserve dual affiliations, and the newly adopted state party constitution includes a provision encouraging merger talks between the national Forward and Alliance Parties.

“This merger best serves the party in Minnesota and we will advance the broader movement by bringing together two national parties,” Fuehrer said. “It is my goal for Minnesota to lead by example in demonstrating how politics can be done differently, and to help broker a future national merger.”

Following the vote, members of the newly combined organization held a strategy session focused on candidate recruitment, party growth, and planning for the 2026 election cycle.

In a statement published Saturday on X, the national Forward Party wrote, “Congratulations to the Forward Party of Minnesota and the Independence-Alliance Party on their merger! This is a big deal for the state of Minnesota and for efforts to build viable new political options generally. We can’t wait to take party building there and elsewhere to the next level.”

This marks the second merger between a Forward affiliate and an existing state party in 2025. In April, members of the Utah Forward Party and the United Utah Party agreed to merge under the Forward Party name and a shared leadership model. Before that, in October 2023, the South Carolina Forward Party and the Independence Party of South Carolina completed a similar agreement to form the Forward Party of South Carolina.

I wonder if the name will confuse some voters into thinking that they are advocating Independence for Minnesota.

I wonder where Musk might fit in to all this. Since he’s been quite silent recently I guess he’s moved on to another shiny new toy.
