Libertarian Party of Wisconsin Condemns Sen. Ron Johnson’s Vote to Block Epstein File Release

The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin has condemned U.S. Senator Ron Johnson following his vote to block an amendment requiring the public release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, calling the decision an example of political power serving itself.

In a September 14 statement, the party criticized Johnson for supporting a motion to table an amendment that would have required disclosure of records tied to Epstein’s criminal activities and the government’s handling of his case.

The amendment, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, would have mandated the Department of Justice to release all unclassified Epstein-related files within 30 days. It failed in a 51–49 vote, with all Democrats opposed to tabling and Republican Senators Rand Paul and Josh Hawley joining them.

“Senator Johnson has chosen secrecy over transparency, power over accountability, and government protectionism over the people’s right to know the truth,” the statement read.

The party described the Epstein case as “a glaring indictment of how the most powerful are shielded by institutions that claim to serve justice,” pointing to past deals and buried records that it argued left “ordinary citizens with only fragments of the truth.” It added that libertarians have been warning against the concentration of political power for decades, and Johnson’s vote “confirms that lesson once again.”

The party also raised broader concerns about Johnson’s record, noting that he “campaigned on being a defender of truth and a check on government corruption,” and contrasted his vote with that of Paul and Hawley. “Transparency is not a partisan issue,” its statement continued. “Wisconsin voters expect their representatives to stand against cover-ups, not participate in them.”
