International Alliance of Libertarian Parties Appoints U.S. Libertarian Lana Leguía Secretary General

The International Alliance of Libertarian Parties has appointed Lana Leguía, an officer with the New Jersey Libertarian Party, as its new secretary general. The organization’s General Assembly is expected to meet in February as part of earlier reported reorganizing efforts.

In a January 21 announcement, the organization confirmed Leguía’s appointment by its Executive Committee. Leguía serves as vice president of political affairs for the New Jersey Libertarian Party and is the state chapter leader for the Ladies of Liberty Alliance, which focuses on empowering women in the liberty movement. She is also a former Libertarian candidate for office, having run for the New Jersey Assembly in 2025 and for Congress in 2024.

Leguía joins Iván Dubois, the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties’ current president and national representative from Argentina’s La Libertad Avanza, and Marialexandra Garcia, the organization’s treasurer and former chair of the Libertarian Party of Miami-Dade County in Florida.

The International Alliance of Libertarian Parties was established in 2015 following discussions at the 2014 Libertarian National Convention about forming a global ideological effort. It presents itself as a network of independent libertarian parties, each pursuing its own national strategy while collaborating on shared priorities where possible. According to its mission, the organization promotes the exchange of political strategies and best practices among member parties, as well as libertarian perspectives as a global political brand.

Last year, Steven Nekhaila, chair of the Libertarian National Committee, announced that the organization would relocate from Switzerland to the United States. In a statement at the time, Nekhaila said the move was tied to efforts to reunify the organization. He also said the group would adopt a new constitution and bylaws, as well as begin using Libertarian International as a working name, though both names have continued to be used in recent updates.

The International Alliance of Libertarian Parties’ General Assembly is expected to meet next month to discuss those changes, with a tentative meeting date anticipated on or around February 26.

At the time of Nekhaila’s remarks, the organization reported having 19 member parties across 18 countries. That list is no longer publicly available following the organization’s website undergoing an overhaul in January. Since the start of the year, however, the group has announced several new associate members, including the United Independents Congress of Jamaica, Girchi – More Freedom of Georgia, and Voluntia of the Czech Republic.

As of January 22, the U.S. Libertarian Party does not have a sitting representative to the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties, though it remains a fully recognized member. The Libertarian National Committee is currently considering a motion that would delegate representative authority to Nekhaila as chair through the conclusion of the February General Assembly meeting. That ballot will close later this month.
