The Green National Committee has elected Kalia Fitzgerald of North Carolina Green Party as the newest co-chair of the Steering Committee, which is the main body responsible for managing the Green Party’s national operations.
Results released this week show that Fitzgerald was elected as co-chair of the Steering Committee, defeating Aly Schmidt of Texas in a ranked-choice vote conducted using a secret ballot. National delegates also had the option to select “No Other Candidate.” Fitzgerald will fill the remainder of the term running through July 26, 2026, which happens to be the final day of the Green Party’s 2026 Annual National Meeting.
As the ballot was secret, official results were not released beyond raw tabulation data, though the party otherwise confirmed Fitzgerald as the winner. The vote did include ballots from 32 states and accredited caucuses, accounting for 76 cast overall with two National Committee delegates abstaining. Two-thirds of active state affiliates and caucuses were required for quorum.
The GPUS Steering Committee is responsible for overseeing routine operations, including staff and contractor management, finances, communications, publications, legal needs, and other administrative matters. It also coordinates committee and caucus work, manages the various proposals sent to the National Committee, and carries out any directives approved by the organization.
The Steering Committee includes seven co-chairs, a secretary, and a treasurer elected by the National Committee. Its co-chairs typically serve staggered two-year terms, with four elected in odd-numbered years and the remaining three elected in even-numbered years.
In her provided candidate statement, Fitzgerald said she joined the North Carolina Green Party in 2022 and currently serves as co-chair of the state organization’s Black Caucus, as well as a member of its Coordinating Committee and its Candidate Endorsement Committee. She also said she was the campaign manager for Michael Dublin’s congressional campaigns, has served on several other national party committees, and is the host of Green Party Tea, a YouTube program focused on the Green Party and its candidates.
Independent Political Report was unable to determine which Steering Committee seat Fitzgerald is filling or what led to the seat becoming vacant, as the party’s website has not yet been updated to reflect the change. IPR has reached out to the Green Party for clarification and will update this article if a response is received.
