Russell Means seeks recognition for Republic of Lakotah

This weekend’s Washington Post Magazine has a 7,500-word profile of 1988 Libertarian presidential contender Russell Means, who, “along with three other Lakota Indians,” recently “severed his ties with the United States and declared himself a founding member of a new, autonomous nation — the Republic of Lakotah. Unsanctioned by their tribal government, and speaking only for themselves, the dissidents claimed dominion over more than 93,000 square miles of traditional Lakota territory — a continuous chunk of sparsely populated dry land that includes parts of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.” Means “was here in Washington seeking diplomatic recognition from the world community so that he could ultimately finagle a seat at the United Nations, whether the U.S. of A. likes it or not. His motto, borrowed from Gandhi, is, ‘First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.'”

The article also details a conversation between Means and then-Libertarian Party Executive Director Shane Cory, as well as Means’s current campaign “to become tribal chair on Pine Ridge. ‘I’m going to run on the freedom ticket,’ he said, describing an ultra-Libertarian scheme. ‘If I win, I will not have a job. I’ll do nothing. But I think the U.S. government will see that we have a constituency, and they’ll listen to us.'”

The moment a tribal government declares independence will be huge news. They could declare industrial hemp legal and actually have a sustainable tribal economy.

And immediately lose their funding from Washington. Ain’t gonna’ happen.

    PEACE
    Steve

LOL Right… Russel Means is nothing but a bitter, woman beating, Native Red Neck. He’s been up in arms over seceding ever since he lost his case in the Navajo Nation over his conviction of domestic violence. He doesn’t even have any sway with AIM chapters and is basically a wack job extremist.
