The national Forward Party has thrown its support behind United Kansas Party candidate Scott Morgan for Kansas Secretary of State, calling the endorsement a continuation of its support for candidates who put voters ahead of parties.
The party announced its endorsement Wednesday, October 21, pointing to Morgan’s experience in state and federal government, along with his involvement in building the United Kansas Party, as the primary reasons behind it. Morgan is among a growing number of candidates from outside the Forward Party to receive its support this election cycle, including Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
“Scott Morgan understands that the person running a state’s elections should answer to voters, not to a party,” Forward Party CEO Lindsey Drath said in the announcement. “He has spent more than a decade helping build a new political home for Kansans who want more choice and more common ground, and that mission is closely aligned with Forward’s. We are proud to support him.”
According to the party, Morgan is a Lawrence attorney and former publisher who previously worked for Republican U.S. Sens. Nancy Kassebaum and Bob Dole. He also represented the U.S. Senate at the Federal Election Commission and served as counsel to former Kansas Gov. Mike Hayden.
Morgan later served two terms on the Lawrence school board and has spent much of the past decade helping organize the United Kansas Party. He currently serves as the organization’s executive director.
Morgan will face Republican Pat Proctor and Democrat Jennifer Day in the November general election. The three are competing to replace Republican incumbent Scott Schwab, who chose not to seek reelection and instead made an unsuccessful bid for his party’s gubernatorial nomination.
