Baldwin endorsed by best-selling author

Chuck Baldwin, the presidential candidate of the Constitution Party, was endorsed today by Jerome Corsi. Corsi is the author of New York Times best-sellers Unfit for Command and The Late Great USA. He just published his newest book Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, which is highly critical of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. An article on Jerome Corsi was prominently featured on the front page of the New York Times today, and in that article Jerome Corsi endorsed Chuck Baldwin.

Mr. Corsi, who has over the years also written critically about Senator John McCain, Mr. Obama’s probable Republican opponent, said he supported the Constitution Party presidential nominee, Chuck Baldwin, and had not been in touch with McCain aides. He called his reporting on Mr. Obama, which he stands by, “investigative,” not prosecutorial.

Another site got Chuck Baldwin’s perspective.

“We are thrilled to have the endorsement of Jerome Corsi,” he said. “For years, he has sounded the alarm on key issues from the North American Union to immigration. These are Constitutionalist issues and ours is the only party offering that.”

I would not be flattered to have that endorsement. The man is a dirty liar, regardless of political affiliation.

  2. Trent Hill Post author | August 16, 2008

Of course someone cant be militaristic and fully non-interventionist, it is a contradiction. Its like being fully pro-life, except for in the exception of rape and incest.

    But, Corsi is pretty non-interventionist.
Just like those who advocate exceptions are still “pretty pro-life”.

  3. G.E. August 16, 2008

I don’t believe one can be militaristic and non-interventionist. Large standing armies, “preparedness,” always lead to war. This is the traditional “American conservative” position. (Look, I even threw you a bone there). Corsi’s is the new (neo) conservative position.

    GE,

As I said, I wont be an apologist for Corsi. He’s undoubtedly playing the field here. He made a fiery non-interventionist speech at the CPNC, and I spoke with him, at length, about non-interventionism. He is definetly militaristic, but is also a committed non-interventionist. He’s clearly shirking his personal beliefs in an attempt to sell books, which I think is pretty horrible and pretty unethical–but it doesnt make him a neocon.

  5. G.E. August 16, 2008

Baldwin’s name was on the front page of the New York Times, was mentioned on Larry King Live 2-3 times, his name is mentioned in the introduction to the currently bestselling book in America, there are 1030 articles on GoogleNews about Corsi and his book and about 1/3rd of them mention Chuck Baldwin.

In Ed McMahon voice: “I did not know that.”

  6. G.E. August 16, 2008

Trent – Man, you are a great apologist for odious people. The Barr campaign should hire you.

Corsi is an obvious neocon, or at least someone who pretends to be a neocon (i.e. a liar).

Obama’s naïve, anti-war, anti-nuclear foreign-policy, predicated on the reduction of the military, the eradication of nuclear weapons and an overconfidence in the power of his personality, as if belief in change alone could somehow transform international politics, achieve nuclear-weapons disarmament and withdrawal from Iraq without adverse consequences, for us, for the Iraqis or for Israel.

    Pure neocon hate.

Actually, Corsi makes voting for Obama sound good!

  7. Trent Hill Post author | August 16, 2008

Well, now im convinced of the fact that Corsi is just trying to sell books by appealing to his mainstream-conservative audience.

Doesn’t change the fact that he is a non-interventionist, just changes the fact that Corsi cant be trusted.

  8. Mike Gillis August 16, 2008

    from the book jacket:

“-Obama’s naïve, anti-war, anti-nuclear foreign-policy, predicated on the reduction of the military, the eradication of nuclear weapons and an overconfidence in the power of his personality, as if belief in change alone could somehow transform international politics, achieve nuclear-weapons disarmament and withdrawal from Iraq without adverse consequences, for us, for the Iraqis or for Israel.”

The reduction of the military bit is just inaccurate, as is the withdrawal from Iraq, which is isn’t that different from McCain’s position.

As far as I know, Baldwin still has the right position on Iraq: getting the hell out of there.

It seems odd that Corsi would attack Obama by misinterpreting his position as “withdrawal” and lambasting it; and then endorsing a candidate that actually IS anti-war and pro-withdrawal.

    Mike,

    A better question–if I want books,can you get me a discount? lol.

  10. Mike Gillis August 16, 2008

    Mike,

Where did you read this blurb? Furthermore, that is mincing words. Corsi is non-interventionist but DOESNT call himself “anti-war”. I suspect this is because the man was alive during Vietnam and doesnt want people assuming he is anything like the hippies, yippies, or ACORN organizers.

The blurb was on the inside jacket of his new Obama book. I work at Barnes and Noble.

Very minimal? Baldwin’s name was on the front page of the New York Times, was mentioned on Larry King Live 2-3 times, his name is mentioned in the introduction to the currently bestselling book in America, there are 1030 articles on GoogleNews about Corsi and his book and about 1/3rd of them mention Chuck Baldwin.

All of these mentions are favorable–and its a GREAT amount of press.

  12. G.E. August 16, 2008

Again, I need to reiterate, there’s nothing wrong with selling books and stacking cash. Good for Corsi! But you can sell some of your credibility along with the sale of those books, if you market them in a certain way. I feel this is what Corsi has done. This was his wager to make, and he did so.

Now — Imagine if Baldwin had rejected the endorsement. That would have been BIG NEWS. As it is, the news is very minimal.

  13. Trent Hill Post author | August 16, 2008

    GE,

I didn’t say I agreed with Corsi’s reasons. Hell, perhaps those arent his reasonings, and I have misunderstood him–maybe he is really just two-faced and trying to sell books. *shrug* Im not going to defend him, because I dont him that well. But I certainly will try to insert some truth into your otherwise false accusations against the man. He is NOT a neocon, NOT for invading Iran, was NOT a friend to Bush or McCain, and IS non-interventionist.

  14. G.E. August 16, 2008

Jeez. “Anti” and “war” have meanings independent of hippies (as if they were worse than the alternative).

Corsi = POS. Baldwin should have denounced his endorsement. (Now THAT would’ve generated press!)

  15. Trent Hill Post author | August 16, 2008

    Jared,

Corsi mentions both Chuck Baldwin and the Constitution Party in the INTRODUCTION to the book.

    *BUZZZ*

    Try again.

  17. Jared August 16, 2008

Because Corsi is 2-faced and I could almost 100% guarantee that the Obama book makes no mention of the Constitution Party or Chuck Baldwin. He needed to get the big publisher and be a #1 bestseller by getting mainstream attention.

If I was in the CP I would oppose him as much as Keyes.

  18. Mike Gillis August 16, 2008

I read the blurb on Corsi’s book last night and one of his criticisms of Obama was his “anti-war” foreign policy.

How can he justify an endorsement of Baldwin, who actually IS anti-war?

  19. G.E. August 16, 2008

attacking him for expressing doubt about 9/11 on Friday evening.

No need to worry about that happening to Bob Barr.

  20. sunshinebatman August 16, 2008

The obscenely pro-Obama General Electric’s MSNBC Countdown show has been tearing into Corsi this past week, including attacking him for expressing doubt about 9/11 on Friday evening.

  21. G.E. August 16, 2008

As for your John Kerry/George Bush comparison GE–he’s criticized both. I suspect he usually aims his books at the liberal candidates (Kerry then Obama) because thats what he can get funding for,and thats how he can push books.

Nothing wrong with making money. But as such, the guy is a paid shill for the neocon Establishment. Stepping out and endorsing Baldwin is commendable, but until he comes out and says “sanctions are an act of war and I want free trade with Iran,” I will rank him about as highly as I do Alan Keyes.

  22. Trent Hill Post author | August 14, 2008

Helping John McCain win? Jerome Corsi DESPISES John McCain, and has written against him MANY MANY times on the immigration issue.

As for your John Kerry/George Bush comparison GE–he’s criticized both. I suspect he usually aims his books at the liberal candidates (Kerry then Obama) because thats what he can get funding for,and thats how he can push books.
But he has criticized Bush too.

Interesting he thinks John Kerry was “unfit for command,” but not George W. Bush?

I’m surprised you are defending this smut peddler, Trent.

  24. johncjackson August 14, 2008

He may have endorsed Baldwin but it appears he is most interested in helping John McCain win. he also happens to be a terrible writer of the tabloid variety.

  25. Trent Hill Post author | August 14, 2008

    GE,

I cant speak to his past, only to his thoughts on the global situation as of May of this last year–and he is a non-interventionist. Perhaps thats a product of the Ron Paul Revolution, or some other evewnt, I don’t know.

  26. G.E. August 14, 2008

To be fair, that article is from late 2006.

  27. G.E. August 14, 2008

Here, Corsi condemns “negotiations” with Iran, and China and Russia’s block of “meaningful sanctions.”

With the appointment of Condoleezza Rice, a James Baker protege, to be secretary of state at the start of Bush’s second term, the administration changed policy to support negotiations with Iran to be led by the EU-3 of France, Germany and the UK, together with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Two years later, those negotiations have predictably stalled in the U.N. Security Council where permanent members Russia and China, both allies of Iran, have blocked any meaningful sanctions.

Corsi clearly says that a nuclear Iran is “unacceptable.” THAT is unacceptable.

Just Google “jerome corsi” “sanctions” “Iran”, there’s plenty exposing him as a neocon. Unless there’s a term for someone who’s WORSE than Bush/Cheney on foreign aggression.

  28. Trent Hill Post author | August 14, 2008

    GE,

Actually–no, I dont think so. I didnt ask him specifically, but he said, “Until they actually threaten us, they are none of our business. If they invade Iraq–thats Iraq’s business. If they talk mean to France, that is France’s business”.

He is certainly a militarist who believes in big standing armies and such–so one could argue he is too pro-military. But neocon is a SERIOUS stretch.

  29. Mike Gillis August 14, 2008

Silly GE, sanctions are only an act of war when “they” do it to “us”. 🙂

  30. G.E. August 14, 2008

So Corsi does not support sanctions against Iran? He’s for free trade with Iran?

Sanctions are an act of war.

  31. Trent Hill Post author | August 14, 2008

There is no threshold. He either is or is not. He is not, he is a paleoconservative and non-interventionist.

  32. G.E. August 14, 2008

My threshold for neoconness is a lot lower than yours.

  33. Trent Hill Post author | August 14, 2008

    Red,

When was he on Larry King, and can you find a clip?

  34. Trent Hill Post author | August 14, 2008

“Yeah, too bad he’s a neocon.”

This is false. Although Corsi is personally alarmed about Iran (and actually, tends to be wary of Cuba and China too)–he does NOT advocate intervention. I had my doubts, buthaving spoken with him on two seperate occasions, I’v found he’s a VERY committed non-interventionist.

  35. RedPhillips August 14, 2008

He mentioned Baldwin and the CP several times on Larry King also.

G.E., where Corsi stands on foreign policy is very murky. I was concerned with him being the nominee because of his obsession with Iran. I was assured over and over by people who know him that he had become much more non-interventionist. I would not have been comfortable with him being the nominee, but I think he has backed off his Iran obsession.

  36. NewFederalist August 14, 2008

Baldwins’ electoral success depends heavily on CA especially since he will not appear on the ballot in TX or NY. If he does not win the lawsuit in CA he will be 0 for 3 of the top EV rich states.

  37. Mike Gillis August 14, 2008

    Sivarticus,

I think alot of your prediction hinges on Baldwin and the CP getting the CA ballot line back, though I suspect they’ll probably win their lawsuit.

  38. Sivarticus August 14, 2008

This is a good endorsement for Baldwin. I expect the Constitution Party to get at least 100,000 more votes this year from some Ron Paul supporters, as long as they tie up their California troubles. Though I greatly doubt Baldwin will be able to equal Barr or Nader, I expect them to blow the Greens and the rest out of the water with a clearly improved return over 2004.

  39. G.E. August 14, 2008

Yeah, too bad he’s a neocon.

  40. kalipay August 14, 2008

    Great publicity: we’re thrilled! 🙂
