Election Commission Loosens Up On Some Groups

The Federal Election Commission issued two rulings this week that continued a move toward a looser interpretation of election laws and could mean an increase in the use of loosely regulated, independent political groups in the 2010 midterm elections.

In separate decisions, the commission found that the Pennsylvania-based Lantern Project and the union-supported American Leadership Project had not engaged in explicit advocacy for or against one candidate and therefore, did not need to register as political action committees…

The rulings could lead to an increase in both the organization of and donation to 527 groups during the next election cycle…
