California State Assemblyman to face challenge from Green William Meyers

From the Times-Standard in Mendocino County, California:

Patricia Welch, chairwoman of the Humboldt County Republican Party, said that, as of Friday, no Republican has announced their intention to challenge Chesbro.

But a Green Party candidate has.

William Meyers, who lives in Mendocino County near Point Arena, has announced his intention to challenge Chesbro for his seat and, according to his Web site, is in the process of collecting the signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. Also according to his Web site, Meyers is a researcher and writer who sat on the Point Arena school board for eight years.

Chesbro was also in the process of collecting signatures Friday, hoping to submit them to the California Secretary of State’s Office in lieu of a filing fee.

According to the Secretary of State’s Web site, candidates for state Assembly must pay a candidate filing fee of $952.91 — roughly 1 percent of the position’s annual salary — or submit 1,500 signatures supporting their candidacy. Chesbro said he hoped to submit the signatures in a week’s time.

Chesbro’s announcement comes on the heels of a pair of California Field Polls released in January highlighting voters’ disenchantment with state government. The polls, released late last month, found that 79 percent of registered voters feel the state is on the wrong track and that 72 percent of registered voters disapprove of the Legislature’s job performance.
