LP FOUNDER TAKES ON TOP REPUBLICAN IN AZ SENATE RACE

After losing the 2008 race for President, Sen. John McCain returned to Arizona to seek re-election.. His record in the Senate includes support for Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, bipartisan backing for President Clinton’s bombing of Yugoslavia, a vote for the Patriot Act and sponsorship of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, the infamous McCain-Feingold bill.

On some issues, Sen. McCain has been reliably conservative, voting against the Prescription Drug benefit under Bush, and against healthcare “reform” under President Obama.

He has voted along with other Republicans to expand the federal role in the war on drugs, and he voted for the No Child Left Behind act, expanding the federal role in education.

In 2008 Sen. McCain lobbied Republicans in Congress to support President Bush’s bailout of the banks, as then Sen. Obama lobbied Democrats to back the bailout.

The Libertarian Party was formed in 1971 in response to the imposition of government controls on wages and prices by President Richard Nixon. Dave Nolan decided that the Republican Party was no longer an effective means to fight for limited government, and began holding meetings in his living room.

This year, Dave Nolan is challenging another big government Republican. Dave Nolan is seeking the Libertarian nomination for U.S. Senate tochallenge Sen.John McCain.

Dave Nolan intends to stress the economic issues in his campaign, pushing for honest money, and end to the Federal Reserve system, and his opposition to bail-outs of banks and big business. He will also campaign to restore civil liberties, whether the issue is the Patriot Act, or the War on Drugs, and for a non-interventionist foreign policy.

The Nolan for Senate campaign will be a high profile advertisement for The Libertarian Party as an alternative for over-taxed, over-regulated Americans. After 8 years of Bush league statism under Republican auspices, the Democrats have shown in less than two years their own commitment to even bigger government.

From wikipedia:

David Fraser Nolan hosted the meeting at which the Libertarian Party of the United States was founded in 1971. He subsequently served the party in a number of roles including National Chair, editor of the party newsletter, chairman of the By-laws Committee, chairman of the Judicial Committee, and Chairman of the Platform Committee.

Nolan was born in Washington, D. C., and grew up in Maryland. During high school, he read science fiction and became a fan of Robert Heinlein, whose libertarianism shaped his own ideology, as did the works of Ayn Rand. He enrolled at MIT, graduating with a B.S. in political science in 1966.

Nolan was a member of Young Americans for Freedom in 1969 when more than 300 libertarians organized to take control of the organization from conservatives. Many walked out after a physical confrontation sparked by the burning of a draft card in protest to a conservative proposal against draft resistance.

As previously reported at IPR, Nolan is also running for LNC At Large at this weekend’s Libertarian National Convention in St. Louis.

The war on drugs is a tale of a once great and free nation which fell down a rat hole into a fantasy world riddled with peculiar and dystopian logic.

No amount of money, police powers, weaponry, wishful thinking or pseudo-science will make our streets safe again; only an end to prohibition can do that. How much longer are we willing to foolishly risk our own survival by continuing to ignore the obvious, historically confirmed solution?

For those of you who are still living in some strange parallel universe, one where prohibition actually works, may I suggest that you return to high school economics class, and learn about supply and DEMAND. Learn that you cannot up DEMAND simply by upping supply. Contrary to popular held superstition, drugs are not PUSHED, the drug dealers are filling a DEMAND not creating one. The DEMAND is here in the US and is impossible to control, but what is possible to control, is the income from that DEMAND. All we have to do is allow legal businesses to meet that DEMAND. Under proper regulation drug use will not rise, as it couldn’t get any worse than it is at present.

If you support prohibition then you’ve helped trigger the worst crime wave in history.

If you support prohibition you’ve a helped create a black market with massive incentives to hook both adults and children alike.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped to make these dangerous substances available in schools and prisons.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped raise gang warfare to a level not seen since the days of alcohol bootlegging.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped create the prison-for-profit synergy with drug lords.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped remove many important civil liberties from those citizens you falsely claim to represent.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped put previously unknown and contaminated drugs on the streets.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped to escalate Theft, Muggings and Burglaries.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped to divert scarce law-enforcement resources away from protecting your fellow citizens from the ever escalating violence against their person or property.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped overcrowd the courts and prisons, thus making it increasingly impossible to curtail the people who are hurting and terrorizing others.

If you support prohibition you’ve helped evolve local gangs into transnational enterprises with intricate power structures that reach into every corner of society, controlling vast swaths of territory with significant social and military resources at their disposal.

And one last thought: The real “drug Dons” are the rich and powerful who control the government-licensed drug cartel (Big Pharma). They view people who oppose proper regulation of these unpatentable –thus at present illegal– substances, as “useful idiots”

When President Bush proposed to rob the taxpayers of $700 billion to bail out the banks, the House of Representatives rejected the bailout. Most Democrats and somes Republicans supported it, but most Republicans voted no, and most members of the Black Caucus voted no.

Sen. McCain lobbied Republicans, and Sen Obama lobbied the Black Caucus, and together they changed enough votes to get the bill passed. So if you oppose the greatest single act of theft in American history, be aware that Sen McCain and Barack Obama joined with President Bush to pick your pocket.

Support Dave Nolan for Senate to punish one of the thieves, or at least annoy him.

    David,

Hit him on the gun issue. Should get you some votes in AZ. Hit every gun show you can and tell him he has an F MINUS from Gun Owners of America – category created for McCain.

Milnes: “The Nolan will win election to LNC at large. However he will lose election to U.S. Senate. Unless-maybe-he tries PLAS.”

The Greens have no clout in Arizona. So even if PLAS made perfect sense, which it doesn’t, it would be useless there.

  5. Third Party Revolution

Third Party Revolution would like to endorse David Nolan in his campaign for the Arizona US Senate seat, along with many other third party and indepedendent candidates seeking public offices nationwide, ranging from local to federal levels.

    Robert Milnes,

I appreciate your passionate advocacy of PLAS (Progressive Libertarian Alliance Strategy). How would it be applied in this case for US Senate?

Do you have a URL where your strategy is laid out?

  7. Robert Milnes

Thane Eichenauer, thank you for your comment. I’m broke & depressed & my websiotes are down. No website layout of PLAS Strategy. However I would be willing to offer advice/suggestions to anyone who would take on this project.
AZ is not too exceptionl. Progressives in the West & South are there in significant numbers. But usually keep a low profile and/or work ewithin the democratic party.
If I were the Lib or Green candidate I would declare support for it & try to get as much party support as possible. Then I would approach the other candidate if there is one e.g. Nolan would approach the Green candidate if there is one & negotiate an agreement as to which one should stay on ballot & which one withdraw supporting the other at a press conference. Then campaign together & educate the voters as to what they are doing and why & what is asked of the voter. In this case if you are progressive or green vote for the Lib on this ballot and both parties will work on future such vote coordination in favor of the other. Take a poll before the press conference & after then daily. Polling should spike after the press conference & gradually rise to competitive-15% or so. THEN it should get some MSM.

  8. Robert Milnes

Actually this is quite an opportunity to try PLAS if The Nolan would try it. He would get a lot of support from all over USA & has name recognition, resume, cred, etc.
    The Milnes.
