Email from Mark Hinkle, the California rep to the Libertarian National Committee, about his race for LNC Chair. Hinkle is apparently the only Chair candidate endorsed by any past LNC Chair.
So far, we now have 5 former LP Chairs who’ve endorsed Mark Hinkle for LP Chair.
Just added to the list of Alicia Clark, David Bergland, Steve Dasbach, and Geoff Neale, is Dave Walter.
Here’s what Dave had to say about Mark Hinkle:
I have known Mark Hinkle for more than 30 years and have always admired his constant dedication to Libertarian activism. I served with Mark on the LNC and recall him as always looking to reconcile opposing views, seeking compromises that were in the best interest of advancing the Party’s goals, and behaving professionally towards those with whom he disagreed. Given the unprecedented opportunities presented the LP, the Party needs a uniter, and Mark fills the bill.

Speaking of endorsements…sneak peek, I’ll be putting up an article later:

Paulie,
Thanks for continuing to mention my candidacy for LP Chair.
I’ve just added Jim Lark to my list of past LP Chairs who are endorsing me.
That makes 6 now.
I wonder if any LP Chair candidate has every had 6 past LP Chairs as endorsers???
Thanks again……………Mark Hinkle,
Candidate for LP Chair
Candidate for 15th State Senate district in California
Exactly.
I would rather see the spokesperson title delegated to Penn Jillette, a man whom I sure would never use the oxymoronic term “Reagan libertarian.” 🙂
There appear to be a few here who argue against voting for Hinkle on the grounds that, because he’s getting endorsements from past LNC leaders, he will continue down the same path the LP has been going down for quite some time.
But is this a bad thing? In most years of the party’s existence, hasn’t the LP’s membership grown? Have we not continued to gain name recognition over the years?
Whether Hinkle would make a good chairman or not, I find myself 100% unconvinced by the argument that we should oppose the man who gets the most endorsements. While change might or might not be good, I agree with Mr. Hill that change merely for the sake of change is irrational.
Sincerely,
Alex Peak
Then have the new chair delegate the spokesperson title to Mr. Root.
None of the candidates advocate that.
My second choice at the moment, after Hinkle.
Last I checked, Ruwart is not running for chair.
And whatever his other faults may be, Hancock does not put people to sleep.
Also, where is this notion coming from that a party chair needs to spend a lot of time on TV? That can be delegated.
The last time I sympathized with this sort of argument when it came to LP internal elections was in 2002. I got what I thought I wanted, and the party has still to recover from the damage that caused.
It may be true that great minds think alike. But, then again, there’s you and Don, so it’s not only great minds 😛
“Change” for the sake of change is not an intelligent argument. Putting a random-answer generating program in charge would be “change.” So would joining the Republicans. Or the Democrats. There are many forms of change that even you would certainly recognize as being bad ideas.
If you’re still with me, you may want to come up with a better argument.
I’d suggest that people who have been there and know what an LP chair has to deal with have an opinion that other people should take into consideration.
Sure, everything that happened before 2006 is irrelevant? What a genius argument.
Who cares? Me. And lots of other people.
Trent,
I agree that some of the “change” candidates would hurt the party, possibly to the point of destruction. However, continuing on the same path is a non-starter for me. I’d rather risk destruction than accept irrelevance.
FWIW, my vote will be for John Jay Myers.
I looked up Youtube on Ruwart. She put me to sleep. I hope she doesn’t get on television. Those journalists would eat her alive.
LP needs somebody with some “stones” that can take the heat, give an articulate message, and work with the masses of people that might actually vote for us.
Frankly, the LP is horrible at reaching out to the media and the public. It is almost as if they would rather stay in their little group and not even consider being inclusive.
I thought libertarianism was a tolerant of other peoples’ views. Why then are some of the more hard-line radicals so big-time against new people joining that might have slightly different ideas? It just seems that way from my vantage point.
HAA HAA I just repeated what Don just said. LOL. I just realized what he wrote.
I love it, former past chair endorse Hinkle, they choose someone to continue the same path of nowhere, like the former chair have done, nowhere. It takes the same type to nominate the same type to take this party in the same direction for the last 39 years. NO WHERE.
Don Wills,
Change for change’s sake is silly. I think Bill Redpath has done at least a fair job, while Root and Hancock would both be awful.
Gen Y in the LP @7, figures. This is the problem with rightists like Root. They get the nominations, TV coverage etc. Radicals quit the party in droves. Had Mary Ruwart received the nomination instead of Root, you probably would recognize her-INSTEAD!
Such a list of endorsements is the reason I won’t vote for Hinkle. If you want more of the same thing the LP has been doing for the last 39 years then, vote for Hinkle. If you want change, then vote for any of the other candidates!

Does anyone have a list of all LNC members and their roles each term for the period 1972-1981? I’ve compiled a list for 1981-2010 and I’m looking to fill in the gaps.
I must correct one mistake I just made. I have seen that Wayne Root dude on television a lot. He be the man! Only one I recognize in person.
Never heard of any of them except Mr. Redpath.
So who cares.

Jim Lark.
Recent chairs not on your list include Mike Dixon and Jim Lark.
I don’t have a list handy for earlier years, although you seem to have a lot of those memorized.
Still haven’t heard from the majority of them:
still need Sue Nolan, Paul Grant, Randy Ver Hagen, Mary Gingell, Jim Turney, Bill Redpath, who’d I forget, Ed Crane, others?
Hinkle’s endorsements are unrivaled, that’s for sure.
