Root & Johnson Headline Project to Restore America – Baltimore

Project to Restore America

JUST ANNOUNCED: 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Gov. Gary Johnson to give PTRA Keynote Address…
Hello. I’m Wendy Bidwell, Director of The Project to Restore America.

I’m pleased to announce the details of our 1st Annual Conference…

And I’d like to personally invite you to join us in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, November 19.

As you probably know, the Project to Restore America has one simple goal:

To pass three constitutional amendments we believe will completely stop the “End of America” from happening:

1. Balanced budgets at every level of government…

2. Sound money, backed by gold…

3. And the right of every U.S. citizen to keep 80% of their income.

    RE: having the publisher make changes;
the book was originally titled The Conscience of a Libertarian – Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gambling, and Tax Cuts
Whenever you had the publisher replace “gambling” with “gold” in the title would have been a good time to remove the reference to being a 2012 frontrunner – unless you still intended to run when that change was made.

Also, the book was released barely 2 1/2 years ago (July 6, 2009), not 3 years ago.

    Jeremy @ 20,

I am admittedly biased in various ways.

However, the term “detractor” tends to indicate that the person to whom it is applied is either always, or almost always, critical of the subject.

I don’t know that my praise of and criticism of Root balance out 50/50, but I doubt it’s very far off that.

  3. Darryl W. Perry Darryl W. Perry November 17, 2011

    @Bruce & Wayne
I made no mistake, I’m simply pointing out the fact that the 2012 frontrunner claim is printed on the jacket of Root’s book. I’m not attacking anyone, simply pointing to a source that the event coordinators likely used to create the bio for him.

  4. Jeremy C. Young Jeremy C. Young November 17, 2011

Interesting. I agree that Root deserves criticism on a host of issues, but I also think that acknowledging that we are biased detractors is a key part of that criticism. Just because we’re biased doesn’t mean we’re wrong, right?

  5. Thomas L. Knapp Thomas L. Knapp November 17, 2011

    @16, @17,

I’ll cop to snide. I don’t think the insinuation — that Root is either continuing to intentionally put the message out that he’s a candidate, or he has a message control problem — is unreasonable, though.

The idea that all of the places he speaks manufacture their own bios of him doesn’t pass the laugh test. I haven’t appeared at nearly as many events as he has, but when I appear at an event I am almost always asked to provide and/or proof my bio information.

Another thing that doesn’t pass the laugh test is this notion that Root should never be held up against anything he wrote or said less recently than the day before yesterday. In politics, you don’t get a clean slate every time your past becomes inconvenient, especially when you continually invoke the parts of that past that you find helpful.

I also think it’s time to stop letting Root get away with this game of pretending that anyone who criticizes him, ever, for anything, is just a biased detractor. I’ve praised Root effusively when I thought he deserved it. I don’t owe it to him to be an uncritical cheerleader.

I don’t find the comment at number 3 snide at all. Interesting. Is that the comment you meant, Jeremy, Thomas Knapp’s?

  7. Jeremy C. Young Jeremy C. Young November 17, 2011

I’m going to go ahead and say that Wayne is right on this one. The comment @3 was snide. Not saying snide is a bad thing, but you should own up to it, and since Wayne says the implied allegation is false, the snideness was unwarranted.

“Nice to try to attack me for a book written in November of 2008.”

I’ll remember that the next time you attack Obama for not standing around your dorm room door waiting for you to notice him in 1983.

    [rim shot]

Seriously, Wayne, you need to learn to distinguish attacks and criticisms from people trying to untangle where language came from.

  9. Wayne Root Wayne Root November 16, 2011

My book is now almost 3 years old! Nice to try to attack me for a book written in November of 2008.

Should I go back to publisher and change the book jacket from 3 years ago? That request would get an interesting response! LOL

Guys, they spelled his name right, and didn’t say anything bad about him.

This one is no big deal.

Darryl, it’s easy to make the mistake you’re making. In fact, the event organizers made the same mistake you did, it appears.

Check it out. The Vice-President part is not connected to the 2012 Nomination thing. Wayne’s book said, and it was printed more than just a few weeks ago, it said: “2012 *Presidential* nomination” (emphasis mine).

Wayne is not going to brag about being a leading VP Candidate.

Anyhow, he’s going to speak to a bunch of successful people and he’s going to promote the LP to everyone that’s there.

I’m not sure why this upsets some people, because it would be quite hard to buy that publicity if we even had the money.

  12. Darryl W. Perry Darryl W. Perry November 16, 2011

Root writes I assume the event organizers went out and found a bunch of info on me and wrote a description of who I am for this event. Because it’s pretty clear I didn’t tell them to write “a leading candidate for LP Vice President in 2012.” Huh?

Maybe you should re-red the inside flap of The Conscience of a Libertarian!
“…Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee and frontrunner for the 2012 Presidential nomination Wayne Allyn Root…”

  13. wolfefan wolfefan November 16, 2011

Interesting that one of the major speakers is a leader of Americans Elect.

  14. Tom Blanton Tom Blanton November 16, 2011

Such a deal. You can hear both Johnson and Root talk about restoring America for only $499.

Plus reporters from the Weekly Standard will be in attendance to help them get their message out there.

Then after the show, there are all the cheap Baltimore hookers. Hot damn!

Time is running out – folks better make reservations at the Motel 6 and get their Greyhound tickets right away!

  15. Thomas L. Knapp Thomas L. Knapp November 16, 2011

    “No need to criticize me.”

Glad to hear it, since I didn’t.

  16. Wayne Root Wayne Root November 16, 2011

    Thomas,

First I sent out no press release on this. Too busy getting things done so I can hop on plane tomorrow. I did not publicize this at all. Someone else- Bruce?- found it and posted it at IPR.

Second it’s amazing how everyone assumes everything they read- written by others- should be blamed on me. I assume the event organizers went out and found a bunch of info on me and wrote a description of who I am for this event. Because it’s pretty clear I didn’t tell them to write “a leading candidate for LP Vice President in 2012.” Huh?

I certainly didn’t write that intro. LOL

    No need to criticize me.

It’s bad enough when I take shots for something I did do…that my critics are twisting out of context or completely misunderstanding…

But I do not run this conference. I had nothing to do with promotion of it. I just know I am being paid to speak at an economic conference…just as I’m paid to speak at dozens of business conferences and conventions across the country.

One of the ways I make a living is as a business speaker and author. I’m proud that my views on economics, success and politics are held in high esteem by business leaders across America.

All of these appearances brand more than Wayne Root…they brand the LP. In every appearance I am introduced as “Mr. Libertarian” and the former Libertarian V.P. nominee and the author of “Conscience of a Libertarian.”

    Best,
    Wayne

  17. Thomas L. Knapp Thomas L. Knapp November 16, 2011

    Bruce,

I’m not suggesting that he’s running.

I am, however, suggesting that if he’s not running, he might want to make sure the bio text he presumably sends out to events and other information requesters is current.

  18. Bruce Cohen Bruce Cohen Post author | November 16, 2011

I really do not think Wayne is running for LP Nomination at this point, folks. What’s the advantage for him?

He’s got bigger fish to fry and not enough time to fry them with.

He’ll support the LP Nominee, in either case.

  19. Thomas L. Knapp Thomas L. Knapp November 16, 2011

Strange. I hadn’t noticed they had put “vice” in there.

  20. Thomas L. Knapp Thomas L. Knapp November 16, 2011

Funny how when asked he says he’s not running, but somehow the words “a leading contender for the 2012 Libertarian Vice Presidential nomination” always manage to find their way into his description when he’s doing an event.

Sipos once again demonstrates awesome telepathy! 😉

The post title makes it sound like Root and Johnson had joined in some sort of official team. But upon reading the post’s contents, it seems not.

The post title seems misleading. Looks as if Root’s trying to dishonestly coattail himself onto Johnson’s greater street cred.
