Working Families Party Encouraged by Cuomo’s Talk of New Taxes

The Working Families Party is a labor-based party in New York that gave Governor Andrew Cuomo its ballot line in 2010. In New York one candidate can be listed multiple times if the candidate wins more than one party’s nomination. Cuomo is now reportedly considering establishing new taxes in order to boost state revenue.

“I think we are encouraged by this notion that there needs to be a serious look at making the tax system fairer and progressive taxation is a great accomplishment,” said WFP executive director Dan Cantor in a telephone interview with Gannett’s Albany Bureau today. “We’re certainly encouraged and want to be as helpful as possible here to make the case.”

Cantor suggested that Cuomo could adjust the tax code to target the rich or super rich, especially those making over $5 million per year.

The Working Families Party, until last week, was demanding the Governor keep the “millionaires tax” that was bringing in about $4 Billion a year. The Governor always opposed that tax and instead opted for a tax increase on “millionaires” that amounts to about half that figure. So much for progressivity, and the credibility of the Working Families Party.

The article says Cuomo is “considering higher taxes on the wealthy to fund job-creation initiatives…”

New York has high unemployment because of the taxes and regulation that Mr Cuomo mentioned as problems when he ran for Governor. Will his new taxes fund enough “job creation” initiatives to make up for more jobs lost when higher taxes cause businesses to close or leave New York?
