    1) Based on these minutes and other notes and writings that have been posted here Alicia Mattson was a tremendous secretary. I have been impressed by everything I’ve seen that she’s written in terms of detail and clarity.

    2) Has any reason been offered by the officiating officer why in one round of the LNC Chair election the write-in candidate (Redpath) was not dropped and Hinkle was, while in a subsequent election the write-in candidate (Sloan) was dropped and Rutherford was not?

    They’re already talking about 2016?

Has there already been a decision on a venue for 2014?

Yes. Columbus 2014, Orlando 2016 at the Rosen Center – details of the 2016 contract being finalized now. 2018 location will be decided next year. After that the plan is to always finalize the contract about 4-5 years ahead of time.

I think everyone agrees with that. On the other hand she was also a highly partisan member of a faction on the LNC. That was why some people voted against her. If the only thing she was being evaluated on was the quality and timeliness of minutes she would be a slam dunk for re-election.

Has any reason been offered by the officiating officer why in one round of the LNC Chair election the write-in candidate (Redpath) was not dropped and Hinkle was, while in a subsequent election the write-in candidate (Sloan) was dropped and Rutherford was not?

That latter decision made no sense based on logic or precedent. As Phillies points out, it can only make sense as a way to try to get Rutherford in when he had no legitimate place in getting another round, hoping perhaps that more of his supporters would be rounded up for a new vote.

The fact that such a decision stood is a stain on the delegates as a body, but in the end all it did was waste time and keep other positions from having time for nominating speeches and so forth.

I couldn’t believe he kept running. I would have been mortified to have had NOTA elected instead of me, and politely dropped out. He made the LP body tell him–4 times? 5 times?– that we didn’t want him as chair. I don’t think this will be forgotten.

Makes you wonder why someone would care SO much about LNC elections?

Seems kind of …unhealthy… when you consider the entire LNC budget is less than the budget of some of these individuals’ personal businesses or even household budgets in some cases.

I care about the LP too but when do you say enough is enough?

I actually walked over to Rutherford just as the convention was getting Knedlerized, and point-blank asked him if he would be willing to save the Party from what was obviously a crisis, and agree to withdraw.

He answered me immediately, and his answer was absolutely not.

I had always been on good terms with Mark; he has my respect for his record in his home state. However, I think he made a very bad decision.

I understand that sort of thing — he had a lot of his time, energy, and hopes resting on that race.

However, once the Knedlering began, everything he had worked for prior to that moment started to unravel.

I suspect that if he had withdrawn at that moment, the results for the rest of the races would have been very different. I think his refusal to withdraw turned enough votes to spoil the Secretary election for Alicia, and may have also turned the At-Large elections in at least a couple of cases.

As the Knedlering continued, I was watching the faces of my fellows from Virginia and could see the disgust overtaking several. This cannot have helped the down-ticket races.

My impression is Mattson is not even an incompetent committee chair & secretary, but a destructive one–she worked to undermine the platform of the organization, use maneuvers and styrange rulings, and then cover it up with pretty notes.

The Secretary keeps the organization on track and together. She has worked from day one to tear it apart.

  9. George Phillies

@14 I read the minutes. They look good to me. The LNC elections were more mixed as threads than appears in the minutes; Alicia Mattson did a fine job of unscrambling things.

Hey, anyone know what’s up with plans for the Gary Johnson campaign? Will there be one?
At the convention six weeks ago, I gave my business card to Johnson’s regional coordinator and my state coordinator and offered to help set up campaign events. Haven’t heard a word since.

    @13:

Greg, they cut half the interview. So yeah, maybe they cut the endorsement for political reasons, but it’s kind of hard to prove.

  12. LibertarianGirl

@12 alicia mattson is not only competent , shes fair and an asset to the LP. She may very well roll with a certain LP tide but dont we all. I felt bad when I heard she was crying tabulating her own races votes. she is not rude , loud and she doesnt cheat so I think shes a keeper

  13. LibertarianGirl

i found NV unified voting a little strange , yeah strange…i thought it funny someone went rogue on the 1st Treasurer ballot then hopped back in line on the 2nd….im sure there was no pressure involved:)

  14. LibertarianGirl

Rev thats because your a cool guy and anyone thats met you knows pressuring you would be a waste of time…..I see the benefits of a unified team i just think getting 14 people , let alone Libertarians to all agree on everything is a pretty rare thing. I like a diversified team that can have different ideas but still get along:)

  15. George Phillies

@26 My state didn’t get the press release, errh, memo, either. However, people within earshot will be able to confirm that at the time of the Secretary vote I lobbied for Mattson over Bennett.

  16. Confused

    Ralph @ 12,

I’m not sure how a vote of 2/3 of the delegates at convention to amend the platform constitutes “maneuvers and styrange rulings”.

And do you think it’s better to have Bennett as secretary when she abused her position as convention director to intentionally break the rules to help her friend Michael Cloud get elected? Do you disapprove of that “maneuver”?

  17. Mark Axinn

Isn’t the 2012 LP Convention over (even in the comments column of IPR)?

Alicia Mattson did a terrific job as LNC Secretary; Ruth Bennett will do a terrific job as LNC Secretary. End of discussion.

Time to move on and focus on little things like getting the Johnson/Gray ticket on the ballot and raising some money for their and other Libertarian campaigns.

  18. Joe Buchman

    Mark @ 30

“focus on . . . getting the Johnson/Gray ticket on the ballot and raising some money for their and other Libertarian campaigns.”

    AMEN!

  19. Eric Sundwall

@30 Just dug out my clipboard – where’s the final statewide petition? We need to modify for local races. State chair must be spending too much time on IPR.

  20. Mark Axinn

    Eric @34–

Working on it. Had some formatting issues and also needed to confirm GJ’s home and mailing addresses (they are different) with the campaign. Also, one of our Presidential electors just moved so his address changes too.

Will have it completed soon, well in advance of July 10 start date.

Time for me to get to work and off IPR. 🙂
