As it turns out, no. But he did beat Stein.
VA
Johnson 31,216 0.81%
Stein 8,627 0.22%
Goode 13,058 0.34%
I’m 40, so no, LOL.
I do think Goode draws some “Reagan Democrats” but they haven’t been Democrats in presidential elections in quite some time.
Back in ’68 they were still Democrats, so it is quite possible that had Wallace not run they would have gone for Humphrey over Nixon, but the opposite could be true as well – the deep south went for Goldwater in ’64 and Nixon in ’72.
They did go back to Carter in ’76, but have been solidly GOP in presidential races since ’80. Many were still Democrats on the state and local level for some time after that, but have been steadily switching over – Goode being an example.
If Paulie is correct, then the GOP should have been focusing on Johnson all of this time, rather than on Goode. We’ll see. I never make predictions on what voters will do.
As far as who might be voting for Goode, I would point out that he spent the large majority of his career as a Democrat. I’m sure that you are both a lot older than me, but I do know that at least going back to 1968, starting with Wallace, it was the conventional wisdom (by those who didn’t really know what they were talking about) that the AIP and its successors up to the present with the CP, took more votes from the Republicans, but the fact is the vast majority of Republican voters are utterly incapable of thinking independently and require some “conservative” leader or talk show host to tell them what to do. The fact is that the greater part of our support and our vote has always come from independents and traditional blue collar Democrats.
I wouldn’t. This is not the first poll to show such results. Outside of his own former district, few Virginians know Goode was a Congressman and/or that he’s running for president. Of the ones that do, if they agree with him enough on issues to find him to be preferable to all the other candidates, many are too scared of a second Obama term to actually vote for him. He’s had a very lackluster campaign, raising and spending little money, garnering few interviews, making few public appearances, and skipping most of the debates that he could have been in. His use of social media, while not non-existent, was sparse. Stein has done better in all those categories.
Now that would shock me. Did you also expect Barr to do better in Georgia than any past LP nominee?
I’m not sure I buy this. Margin of error is larger than Goode-Johnson-Stein, but I’d be very shocked if Stein scored as much as Goode. I’d expect Goode to get more in Virginia than any previous CP Pres candidate by 3-5x.
