High School Senior Running As Libertarian for City Council In Mississippi

Zackary Redmond, 18, is a high school senior residing in Gautier, Mississippi. He is part of the graduating class of 2013 and will be attending classes at a local community college in the fall.

However, his summer is going to get a lot busier than that.

Redmond is running as the Libertarian Party candidate for Gautier City Council in the June 4th election in Ward 4.

An excerpt from a January 29th article on GulfLive.com:

A member of the Libertarian Party since Sept. 6, he wants to be a career politician or a teacher. He would like to see more youth involved in government, and his campaign slogan is “New young blood, new youth movement.”

The son of Julius Redmond of Gautier and Amanda Redmond of Grady, Ala., he is a 12-year student of Gautier schools having attended Martin Bluff Elementary and Gautier Middle School before entering GHS, where he is president of the French Club and Future Business Leaders of America and secretary of the National History Club. He also is a library assistant and is enrolled in three Advanced Placement courses.”

“I read all the local news websites every day to keep up with what’s going on in our area,” he said.

Redmond, who turned 18 in October, said he plans to focus on three issues in his campaign: jobs for Gautier, fixing the economic shortfall and reducing crime.

“The city council has missed many opportunities to address these issues and I have no faith in the people on the council,” he said. “It is time for young blood to come in and move the city forward in a positive direction.”

From a May 10th article on GulfLive.com:

GAUTIER, Mississippi — Republican Charles “Rusty” Anderson will face 18-year-old Libertarian candidate Zackary Redmond on June 4 to decide the Gautier Ward 4 City Council race…

…Redmond, 18, is the youngest candidate on the entire slate. A 2013 graduate of Gautier High School, he is a 12-year student of Gautier schools and serves as president of the French Club and Future Business Leaders of America and secretary of the National History Club.

“I am focusing on three issues,” he said, “jobs for Gautier, fixing the economic shortfall and reducing crime. The city council has missed many opportunities to address these issues and it is time for some young blood to come in and move the city forward in a positive direction.”

Call me cynical, but isn’t a “libertarian” who “wants to be a career politician” a little weird?

Well, somewhat. But I suppose one can be pessimistic enough to expect that a lifetime can be spent in politics trying to minimize the state; or, in the case of minarchists, to expect that politicians will be “needed” even in a libertarian society.
