South Carolina Democrat Traditional Values – Condescension, Racism, Sexism, and Old Fashion Hatred?
Once again, South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian proves himself to be mean-spirited, dirty, and too low to remain chairman of a political party. It is not enough for Harpootlian to compare Governor Nikki Haley to Hitler’s mistress Eva Braun (09/04/12), or imply Nikki is less than human by saying “I didn’t know she had feelings,” the following day, or to suggest her leadership is “chicken doo-doo” (04/25/13). Now, Harpootlian dons an undeniable racist hat and says Haley, the South Carolina born daughter of Sikh immigrants, should be sent “back to wherever the hell she came from.” (05/03/13)
The South Carolina Libertarian Party calls for an immediate end to this behavior. We urge the South Carolina Democratic Party to reclaim some shred of dignity for themselves and for our state by disavowing his statements.
Only the Libertarian Party consistently calls for respecting every individual and their rights regardless of lineage. Impugning someone’s humanity for the sake of headline grabbing creates a dangerous culture of hate. It is a culture we can ill afford. History, both home and abroad, is rife with examples of why we should avoid this behavior.
No one really believes Harpootlian intended his comment to be interpreted to mean Haley should be sent back to Bamberg, her birthplace, or her home in Lexington. He compounds his racist insult to the Governor by suggesting that “Anybody implying anything different is attempting to feign insult.” Really, Dick? Now you presume us fools?
This kind of base racist talk may have been acceptable to a 1930’s South Carolina Democratic Party dominated by Klan members, but it should not acceptable today.
We urge the members of today’s South Carolina Democratic Party to make it perfectly clear to Mr. Harpootlian, and to everyone else who might still believe racism and bigotry are core political values in the Palmetto State, that they are flat wrong.
Victor Kocher, Chairman of the SCLP said, “The politics of hate and racial division embraced by some Democrats and Republicans in this State must end. By dividing us one against another in quest for power injures us as a people, stalls our ascent to greatness, and debases the fundamental respect each individual deserves.”
