On news that young Floridians self-organized as the Dream Defenders have begun an extra session of the Florida legislature in their State Capitol building in Tallahassee, Attorney Shahid Buttar, Director of Civil Rights Enforcement for the Green Shadow Cabinet issued the following statement:

“The Dream Defenders have taken inspiring actions in Florida to force the mass injustices of our nation’s criminal “justice” system to the front of the public agenda. Politicians have no business discussing new government programs, or issues as abstract as budget deficits, while our public agencies continue the doubly offensive project of consuming taxpayer dollars to abuse our rights. Creative non-violent tactics like these are the sort that birthed our democracy, secured every right that We the People enjoy today, and will once again win victories for everyday people over oppressive institutions.”

Reverend Bruce Wright, a Floridian who serves in the Green Shadow Cabinet as Chair of the President’s Commission on Ending Homelessness, said he agreed with the Dream Defenders actions, making the case that:

“Zimmerman is clearly a racist vigilante in the same vein as the vigilante slave patrols of the slavery period and immediate post-slavery period of the United States. And lastly, it is clear that the so called ‘Stand Your Ground’ law is dangerous and has racist underpinnings and must be overturned immediately.”

The Dream Defenders describe the origins of their sit-in, called #TakeoverFL, as follows:

SINCE TUESDAY, JULY 16, WE HAVE BEEN CONDUCTING A SIT-IN OF GOV. RICK SCOTT’S OFFICE IN THE STATE CAPITOL. WE ARE CALLING ON THE GOVERNOR TO CONVENE A SPECIAL SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE TO ENACT THE TRAYVON’S LAW TO REPEAL STAND YOUR GROUND, BAN RACIAL PROFILING, AND END THE SCHOOL-TO-PRISON PIPELINE.

ON THURSDAY, JULY 18TH, THE GOVERNOR FINALLY MET WITH US, BUT PROVIDED NO REAL LEADERSHIP. RATHER THAN CALLING FOR A SPECIAL SESSION, HE IS CALLING FOR A STATEWIDE DAY OF PRAYER TO END RACIAL PROFILING. BUT FAITH WITHOUT WORKS ISN’T JUSTICE.

WE ARE TAKING A STAND NOT ONLY IN TRAYVON’S MEMORY, BUT FOR OUR WORTH AS PEOPLE AND CITIZENS OF FLORIDA. WE CAN NOT ALLOW GOV. SCOTT TO NEGLECT HIS RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THE SAFETY AND WELL-BEING OF ALL FLORIDIANS.

WE ARE HERE UNTIL OUR STRUGGLE FOR JUSTICE IS WON. AND IF WE ARE TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
