Gubernatorial Candidate Scott Lively: Homosexuality is Similar to Alcoholism

Scott Lively, independent candidate for Governor of Massachusetts

By Michele Richinick

“I believe that homosexuality is a behavioral disorder on par with alcoholism or eating disorders,” the independent candidate said Tuesday on “The Alan Colmes Show,” a nationally syndicated program aired on Fox News Radio. His comments were posted by the blog Right Wing Watch.

“It isn’t just a moral weakness, it’s something that people suffer with, and it’s a compulsion,” Lively said. He added: “I think homosexual conduct is inherently wrong and dangerous and harmful.” Of course, there is no actual evidence that makes any kind of plausible link between homosexuality and having a drinking problem, though most would agree that alcoholism is a big issue that needs to be prevented in as many people as possible, unlike homosexuality.

Lively, an evangelical pastor campaigning in one of the country’s most liberal states, publicly opposes gay rights. Lively made headlines earlier this month when he said President Obama was part of the gay agenda and guilty of destroying family ideals and religious values.

He also recently backed Russia’s anti-gay laws and called Russian President Vladimir Putin “an example of moral leadership that has shamed the governments of Western Europe and North America.”

Godbless you CLC, you are so misunderstood and oppressed. Perhaps you should stop looking at the internet.

  3. I could care less what you think about me. I didn’t write the court decision. You beg me to discuss the issues and when I do this is the response I get. God bless you.

  4. Jill Pyeatt April 16, 2014

The thing is, CLC, that you don’t have any credibility here. Your answers the past few months have been either nonsensical, or designed to annoy. Why would I suddenly accept your word? I don’t agree with your statement, and just telling me to read a court decision doesn’t convince me.

    Read it. Still untrue.

  6. Please read Van Orden v. Perry. It is very sad reflection of our education system that something this basic is disputed.

  7. Jill Pyeatt April 16, 2014

CLC: I also disagree that our society is based on Bible fundamentals. Just because you say something, doesn’t make it true.

  8. God bless you Jed. You are entitled to your own opinions but you are not entitled to your own facts. Please do some research before commenting.

“‘May’ is the key word above. Please remember that the Bible is the fundamental basis for the laws of our society.”

    No it isn’t.

CLC said: ” Please remember that the Bible is the fundamental basis for the laws of our society.”

    That’s news to me.

The Bible is a bit like Game of Thrones… lots of pages involving outlandish tales of adventure and some really disturbing stuff mixed in there.

Personally, I wouldn’t organize my entire life around either book.

“As for the male and female slaves whom you may have, it is from the nations around you that you may acquire male and female slaves. You may also acquire them from among the aliens residing with you, and from their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. These you may treat as slaves, but as for your fellow Israelites, no one shall rule over the other with harshness.”

Abortion is now legal, as is gay marriage in many places… does that mean it’s alright according to the Bible?

I should think you’re either ok with this evolution, or you’re still ticked off about the abolition of slavery… something the Bible clearly thought was an important, healthy and vital part of society.

  15. I never said Biblical punishment was based on individual health. There had to be punishment to stop practices that harmed public health.

Austin, the Bible considers the slave property. Our Supreme Court agreed. But slavery is no longer allowed and so the Biblical law and court precedent have no purpose today. The same with shellfish, which are now safe(r) to eat.

Jed, fornication in adultery causes the transmission of stds. It can cause disease to spread to the marital relation. It can cause impregnation with an unwanted child who uses resources and burdens society. There is some public health basis in enforcing the marriage contract.

There is a stronger public health basis for proscribing sex between men because however exciting such activity may be, it is unhealthy. I can imagine men at the writing of the early law, engaging in sex with men and as a result becoming incontinent, creating a public health hazard. That seems to be a logical basis for the law.

For some reason, our society now promotes unhealthy choice. Sex between men, alcoholism, and overeating being example. Our society is degrading and unless we do something about it, we’ll fall like the Chinese, in an opium-fueled haze as the communists seize control.

  16. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 15, 2014

Also, cutting off a woman’s hand for grabbing another man’s junk. Nothing unhealthy about that.

  17. Austin Cassidy April 15, 2014

“You can all make jokes but it doesn’t dispute the fact that most Biblical law has basis in public health including the ban on sex between men.”

Absolutely! We all know that when a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. That’s just good public health policy.

What does the Bible say about pedophilia?

Trolls shall have smoke blown in their face and be stoned until they cease to move. It’s in the book of Jebediah, I think.

  22. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 15, 2014

And everything in the Bible is completely true. You can read it for yourself. It’s after the part about the talking snake, but before the guy who comes back from the dead.

  23. It is similar to the ban on shellfish and circumcision requirement. Public health is paramount in the Bible.

  24. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 15, 2014

    Cool story, bro.

  25. Yes. I came to the conclusion that the Bible’s ban on sex between men has a reasonable basis. It is a public health hazard.

  26. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 15, 2014

CLC thought LONG and HARD about gay sex, and CAME to an amazing conclusion.

  27. Austin Cassidy April 15, 2014

“Thank you paulie but I don’t engage in homosexual sex and if I did I would give rather than receive.”

Hmm. Sounds like you’ve given this some thought.

  28. paulie April 15, 2014

Apparently somebody doesn’t know that not all gay people have anal sex, and many straight people do. Internet trolls aren’t smart.

CLC may or may not be a dummy but he/she plays one on IPR.

    Perhaps this is CLC’s problem:

    Sounds about right.

“Genesis condemns men having sex with men.”

I’m not aware of Peter Gabriel ever making such a bigoted statement.

  30. Genesis condemns men having sex with men. It does not condemn women having sex with women which is common in nature.

  31. Thank you paulie but I don’t engage in homosexual sex and if I did I would give rather than receive. I wouldn’t even do that though because of concerns the receiver’s anus is infected with AIDS. I believe it is an unhealthy lifestyle like eating too much and smoking.
On the other hand, Lesbian sex can be healty and beautiful if done between two aesthetically pleasing women.

Apparently somebody doesn’t know that not all gay people have anal sex, and many straight people do. Internet trolls aren’t smart.

  33. paulie April 15, 2014

I’ll get you disapers for your birthday then, CLC.

  34. God bless you all. I don’t judge but this is the rationale. Another reason homosexual activity is dangerous is because it can cause incontinence.

  35. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 15, 2014

“Austin, homosexual men have a disproportionate diagnosis of HIV/AIDS.”

And internet trolls have disproportionate tenancy to be sad, lonely, middle aged men taunting people from the safety of their mom’s basement.

  36. paulie April 15, 2014

So what? Lesbians have less chance of getting AIDS than straight people, yet the people who attack homosexuals like this bozo don’t only attack men, do they? It all has to do with their own sexual hypocrisy, self-hate as closeted homosexuals or sexual insecurity as straight people with gay fantasies.

  37. paulie April 15, 2014

    Austin, exactly.

Obviously he chose to compare being gay with alcoholism rather than say being left handed or blonde because alcoholism still has a social stigma.

  38. Austin Cassidy April 15, 2014

It seems that sexual orientation is a genetic trait, similar to alcoholism or eating disorders or baldness… or being born with red hair… or with a genius IQ. I don’t find THAT part of the statement quoted above to be the particularly controversial part.

It’s the whole bit about Putin being a moral leader and the “gay agenda” stuff that is actually on the nutty side. He notes: “I think homosexual conduct is inherently wrong and dangerous and harmful.”

He sounds like the worst elements of the Republican Party. This country has real problems and half of the GOP thinks abortion doctors cause tornadoes and Muslim infiltrators are trying to enact Sharia Law in the United States. The Republican Party’s absolute OBSESSION with gay people over the last decade, to the exclusion of addressing real problems, was a definite contributing factor in why I changed my registration and have no plans to ever go back. And I suspect lots of others feel the same way.

    Homosexuality is inherently wrong because….?

    It is dangerous to….?

Look, alcoholism isn’t inherently wrong, either… it just is what it is. A genetic trait. Though I guess you could say alcoholism is dangerous and harmful… it burns out your liver and some innocent people die in drunk driving related car accidents and such.

I don’t see a whole lot of gay people going on murderous rampages. Do you?

Let everyone do *whatever the hell* it is they want to do, just as long as they’re not hurting anyone else.

  39. paulie April 14, 2014

    “chocolate” squirted out of your…”mind”?

  40. Don’t make the chocolate milk squirt out my nose. I’m still recovering from Dave Terry calling Riley Martin a hippy faggot.

  41. paulie April 14, 2014

May he burn for all eternity in the lake of boiling feces 🙂

  42. johnO April 13, 2014

America’s Party endorsed this guy? So, does Alan Keyes back him? Alan Keyes is of the religious right. He even left the CP if i’m not mistaken. Keyes, not the Lively fella.

  43. langa April 13, 2014

I think this guy actually is Riley Hood. He just got a better haircut and a more expensive suit.

  44. George Phillies April 12, 2014

Mr Lively is running as a independent. Unfortunately, he did change his party registration in time, so he cannot run as a Republican, where he would fit right in. The MA Secretary of State mysteriously recorded Lively’s party as “Libertarian”. This record is incorrect. Lively is not associated with state Libertarian groups, and has made no such claim.

  45. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 12, 2014

“Mr. Lively can expect an endorsement from Riley Hood, I’m sure.”

Not sure about Mr. J. Hood, but America’s Party has been promoting him on Facebook & Twitter.

  46. johnO April 12, 2014

Moscow has some property for sale. As does Crimea or Siberia. Now he should join the Heritage Party? They are pretty hardline on issues to ban things. Better than being an Indy. Gives other Indys a bad name.

  47. paulie April 12, 2014

Birds of a feather…and what colorful plumage it is, LOL

  48. Krzysztof Lesiak April 12, 2014

Mr. Lively can expect an endorsement from Riley Hood, I’m sure.

  49. paulie April 12, 2014

He must be mad because he has such a gay name, LOL

  50. Gene Berkman April 12, 2014

Scott Lively is author of the notoriously absurd “Pink Swastika” with its claim that the German Nazi Party was the first gay rights organization.

I have read part of it, and I no longer agree with Thomas Szasz that mental illness is a myth.

At least now the voters of Massachusetts will be able to reject a candidate for being too pro-Russia.

  51. paulie April 12, 2014

I hope he gets caught under one of those laws in one of those countries and is sentenced under his own law.

  52. paulie April 12, 2014

Wow, what a piece of shit. I did not realize that.

  53. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 12, 2014

He’s also responsible (at least in part) for anti-gay laws in Russia, Uganda, Nigeria, etc.

    April Fool’s!!!

    I wish.

  55. Jill Pyeatt April 12, 2014

    April Fool’s!!!

Wait…that day’s over with. Wow, somebody actually believes that homosexuality and alchoholism are similar “disorders”. He’ s just another “Christian” giving Christians a bad name.

  56. Jed Ziggler Post author | April 12, 2014

Oh do read the transcript of his interview with Alan Colmes. It’s a treat.
