It was a quiet event. There were about 20 people there, and the same officers were re-elected. It was only for two hours, and, and as it turned out, half the group was late because parking was a problem.
Ted Brown, the new chairman of CA, spoke, and gave us some more of the plans made since he was elected four weeks ago.
Any report/news from the event?
As far back as I can remember, I was always very suspicious of authority in general. I never believed anything just because someone said it was true. The only time I believed it was when I could understand it myself. In fact, when I used to get in arguments with my parents (and later my teachers), I never minded losing the argument. But what I did mind, what absolutely drove me crazy, was when they refused to argue anymore, and played the “because I said so” card. To me, that was basically evidence that not only were they wrong, but they knew it.
I never had a lot of toys – my nephew, at age three, already has way, way more toys than I had in my whole childhood – but I do remember melting down my toy soldiers and tank(s) pretty soon ater I got them. I never got any more war toys after that. I doubt it was from any kind of political consciousness at that age, but it just wasn’t a game I wanted to play.
At 17 I knew that my parents didn’t have a clue.
At 21, after 3 years in the Army and 1 year of
college, I was AMAZED at how much THEY
had learned in those years
As far as Paulie’s question above as to when someone realized their parents didn’t know everything, I don’t remember that. I do remember however, not liking Barbie because I knew girls didn’t really look like that. She was all the rage, and I wouldn’t go near her. I guess I was a little rebel even then.

I wonder if those of us into alt party and/or libertarian politics tend to have this moment earlier than other people on average? What are other people’s experiences with that? Personally, I don’t remember ever thinking that everything adults said or did was right. I remember being four years old pretty well, and snippets from when I was two and three, and I don’t remember ever thinking that adults were somehow infallible or godlike. Since I wasn’t brought up with a god-concept, it literally did not exist for me then, and neither did any meaningful substitute. The regime always seemed insane, kindergarten was run by shrews who beat me because I was not able to actually fall asleep at mandatory nap time but layed quietly and pretended, and who wouldn’t believe me when I truthfully told them I was sick (I was too young to remember, but reportedly when I had to start going there, I stopped walking and talking for about nine months); fairy tales were never believable, and I made up my own as far back as I can remember; my parents always argued with each other – especially about how to raise me – so they were never a real infallible authority. I questioned the reality of “reality” itself as far back as I can think. I laughed out loud when I saw birds shit on a statue of Lenin just as our teacher was telling us how great he was. My first memory, literally, was coming home to find a drunk having wandered into our apartment and passed out in his own vomit. And so on.
Anyone else here have similar experiences?

Everyone should check out this video. A troll on an internet message forum got busted on a thread where they were attacking people who were questioning the official government story about Sandy Hook. It turned out that the troll was posting from the Central Intelligence Agency. I’ve got to wonder how many trolls who have popped up on IPR over the years are from the CIA.

The advantage that running for a “local” office has is that the odds of winning is greater,
thereby making them more likely to become a viable candidate for a “higher” office, where
their audience is larger and their ideas are more likely to recruit new members.
Pragmatically, “name recognition”, at this point is as relevant has the “platform” on which
one stands.

OK, two examples. That’s good. I am not counting your last example because US House is a high level office, and I am only talking about local offices.
I am not saying that zero people are recruited from Libertarians running for local offices, or that Libertarians should not run for local offices, but rather to point out that all of the evidence points to Libertarians who run for high level offices being the ones who reach the most people and who recruit the most people into the party/movement.
Has anyone here ever met one person who said they joined the Libertarian Party or movement due to being inspired by a candidate that was running for some low level local office (Soil & Water Commission, Library Board of Trustees, Planning Commission, etc…)?
I have. When I ran for school board in ’99 one of my opponents joined the LP, and stayed active until Obama came along; The next year I ran for county clerk of courts and only talked about jury nullification. It was just last year that I found out one of our local activists came to the LP because of that campaign; In ’08 while running for congress my next door neighbor tried to goad me into a debate but I kept pointing out he was agreeing with me and was giving mostly libertarian talking points…lol, most people here know Bob Bridges.
All this, and I am NOT what most people think of as a qualified candidate. My speaking “style” is a combination of stammering and stuttering. I am fat and bald and old. I am low income. I have long white hair & beard and have an affinity for tie dyes and Harley Davidson attire.

I have never met one person who has said this (either in person or online), and I’ve been in the party since 1996 and I’ve met a lot of people.
I’ve met lots of people who said they became Libertarians/libertarians because of a candidate, usually for President or Governor or US Senate, or because of a friend or family member, or a random person they met who was a Libertarian, or because of a book or website or article, or because of somebody they saw on TV or heard on the radio (not counting candidates for this one as I have already covered them), but I’ve never encounter one person who said they became a Libertarian/libertarian due to a candidate for a low level local office.

For those of us who live in Southern CA, but not in Orange County specifically, it is a big, scary place to drive with freeway exits and entrances everywhere, a million other cars, some of whom knowing the freeways well enough to zip around you, with all the cities blending into one huge, menacing blob.
So forgive me if I oversimplified the closeness of Sana Ana and Fullerton. The cities have a few other things in common, such as size and ethnic make-up.
My original point was that perhaps the fact that none of the cops in Fullerton were held accountable for the horrifying murder of a homeless, unarmed, obviously mentally ill man may have emboldened other bad cops to continue their bad behavior.

“Religionist” is a very vague and contradictory term. On the one hand Ayn Rand despised mystics and mysticism. On the OTHER hand, Rand’s “gospel” was so stern and strict her followers (i.e.) “Objectivists” were criticized as being ‘dogmatic’ and ‘doctrinaire’.
Ayn Rand was decidedly the most influential mind of the 20th century. Ironically, even though she rejected “libertarianism” as political idea, I can’t imagine ANY Libertarian who has not been influenced by her ideas..

Today is the 15th anniversary of the tragic loss of Peter McWilliams. He was only 50 years old. McWilliams was an author and an activist. He was witty, charming, passionate and compassionate. He was also a patient. He had been diagnosed with AIDS and non-hodgkins lymphoma. Without medical marijuana, he couldn’t tolerate the medicine he needed to stay alive. In 1996, McWilliams wrote a book titled “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do” arguing for legalization of victimless crimes.
Peter McWilliams resided in California where medicinal marijuana was legalized in 1996, yet, in 1997 federal agents raided his home, arrested him for possession and distribution, and took the computer that contained the books he was working on – including one about the alphabet agencies.
McWilliams’ trial was far from fair. He was not permitted to tell the jury that marijuana enabled him to take his medication, and he was not allowed to mention in his defense that medicinal use was legal in California under Prop215.
While he was out on bail and awaiting sentence he was required to submit to weekly drug testing to make sure he was not using marijuana. Without the medicinal marijuana, he couldn’t keep down his food and pharmaceuticals. On June 14, 2000, Peter McWilliams choked on his own vomit and died.
A Libertarian Party press release stated: “McWilliams was prohibited from using medical marijuana — and being denied access to the drug’s anti-nausea properties almost certainly caused his death.”
Peter McWilliams was a victim of The State. He harmed no one yet they threatened to lock him up and they forbade him access to a plant that could have saved his life.

5) The female police officer who said that she wanted to kick Marla in her nub has not get been put on administrative leave. Nor have the cops who were standing around playing darts. Nor were the ones who were apparently trying to destroy video evidence. Nor was the cop who was eating the edibles. Their cops screwed up royally during an MMJ raid, abused a handicapped patient in a wheelchair, broke into the edibles and ate them and then just sat around playing darts while talking shit (one cop said that she wanted to kick the handicapped patient, Marla James, an amputee, in her nub). Jill… I found the test you linked to interesting. I “only” scored 114. So many questions don’t give adequate response possibilities. Yes or No just doesn’t cut it when it comes to questions or war. Are we talking about a World War II or a Viet Nam for example. Same with the social security questions. Do those currently on social security get cut off or is there a phase in period?

A great video from a fellow Arizonan. The video pertains to the Patriot Act but also exposes the end around politicians give to voters. It’s impossible to engage in a meaningful dialogue with those that allegedly represent you. You get a machine or a bored and uniformed intern that does not care what you have to say and likely will not relay your thoughts, opinions and feelings to said elected official you are seeking to communicate with.
