Biomedical engineer Kent Mesplay announced Wednesday evening that he is seeking the Green Party presidential nomination for the fourth consecutive election. Mesplay finished third in the balloting at the 2012 Green convention, where Jill Stein was nominated on the first ballot. Roseanne Barr received one-quarter of the delegates’ votes, while Mesplay received six percent.
On his Facebook page, Mesplay wrote Wednesday that he is seeking online petition support to appear in the presidential candidate forum at the Green Party Annual National Meeting in St. Louis later this month. Mesplay needs the signatures of at least 50 Greens in all from at least five different states. Mesplay said that environmental activist Darryl Cherney, who is also considering a presidential run but has yet to decide, will also be on the forum panel.
William Kreml, a political science professor at the University of South Carolina who ran protest campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984, 1992, and 2000, is reportedly also considering seeking the Green Party nomination.
