Socialist Party USA nominates Mimi Soltysik for President, Angela Walker for VP

spusa

Ballot Access News reports that the Socialist Party USA’s 2016 nominating convention, being held in Milwaukee, has selected Mimi Soltysik for President and Angela Walker for Vice-President.

Soltysik was the campaign manager for the party’s 2012 ticket, and in 2014 ran for California State Assembly. He is also the co-chair of the national party, and editor of The Socialist magazine. Walker is a bus driver and socialist activist in Milwaukee, where she ran last year year for Sheriff with the independent ballot label “Draft Bernie Sanders for President,” winning over 20% as the only opponent of Democratic nominee and incumbent Sheriff David Clarke.

In 2012, Stewart Alexander won 4,330 votes and was on the ballot in three states as the S.P.U.S.A. nominee for President.

Ask Mimi Soltysik why there are no other Mimi’s in the Socialist Party USA (SPUSA). By that I mean no other former National Chairs, former presidential candidates, or former candidates for national office. Also why did the membership plummet by over 50% during his tenure as national chair of the party. Ask him why the most prominent member of the party, David McReynolds , the first gay man to run for the Presidency, was disciplined and pushed out of the party. Members of the New York City local played a major role in the first days of Occupy Wall Street and were among the first arrested. Why has all put one of those activists left the party?

The reason is the job of the leadership party of the over the last two decades. has focused exclusively with the disciplining and expelling its own membership, . The SPUSA leadership is authoritarian in the tradition of Stalin and not democratic socialists in the tradition of Eugene Debs. Unlike other Maoist / Leninist / Stalinist parties, they lie about it. If you want to vote for an authoritarian party, all means do it. But vote for one whose “policing” class is open about their lack of democracy.

Mimi Soltysik reminds me a bit of Uruguay’s beloved former president Jose Mujica in that he has no artifice and is deeply committed as a socialist to standing up for justice and participatory democracy and standing against oppressive systems. Here’s the Facebook official campaign page for Soltysik/Walker 2016: https://www.facebook.com/Rev2016/timeline

    “Well, he certainly looks presidential.”

It was literally the best picture of him I could find. He doesn’t seem to have a campaign website, and the facebook page shows a picture of the pair of them (with him wearing a very Presidential-looking brown hoodie), but his face is in shadow and he’s looking at the floor.

His running mate is definitely the more photogenic of the two, with a documented ability to both look at a camera and smile simultaneously.

Hopefully they do better on ballot access this time around.

Difference was that in 2008 Brian Moore broke out the checkbook and gave me a call (new number now: 205-534-1622) and in 2012 Stewart Alexander went the all-volunteer route when it came to ballot access.

As a result they went from 8 states in 2008 to 3 states in 2012.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled comment thread with apologies for the commercial interruption.

I actually voted for Angela Walker last year, just because I didn’t particularly care for the Sheriff (though I did vote for him in the primary over a worse opponent), and her wildly unrelated ballot label amused me.

A bit of a shame for them the Milwaukee County Transit Union (bus drivers) didn’t go out on strike again while they were here. That happened a while back and was on the verge of happening again, but they reached a deal the other day for a three-year contract. Would have been convenient timing for all the Socialists in town to join Walker’s coworkers on the picket line. It was during the fifty-year dominance of SPUSA’s predecessor party in Milwaukee, that the county’s public bus system was established.
