Prohibition Party Now a Qualified Party in Mississippi

Ballot Access News:

The Mississippi Secretary of State has approved the Prohibition Party’s request to be a qualified party in that state. The 2016 election will be the first election since 1896 in which the Prohibition Party’s presidential candidate has appeared on the Mississippi ballot.

The party has also finished its New Jersey petition. Assuming it is approved, 2016 will be the first election since 1976 that the party’s presidential nominee has been on in that state.

Note from Paulie: Jim Hedges tells me they are also currently working on qualifying in Iowa, Florida, Tennessee and Vermont. They have already qualified in Arkansas and expect to qualify several other states.

I note that the platform on the site is the 2012 platform. The party now supports single payer healthcare, for example.

It figures that they would support some sort of tax-payer funded health care. If individuals were responsible for their own health care costs, one of the main arguments for prohibiting vices like drinking and smoking (i.e. that they impose large costs on “society”) would basically disappear.

PLUS… the camel (a dromedary at first) was given the Prohibition Party by Thomas Nast who also gave the Democrats the jackass and the Republicans the elephant. The Drys are NOT stealing anyone’s symbol.

The Prohibition Party predates AA by 66 years.

I very much dislike the use of the AA camel by prohibitionist because it violates our traditions; people working a healthy program could care less what other people put in their body because the problem is self not the substance. While this neo temperance party has every right to representation they also should expect others to tell them prohibition doesn’t work and their porn tax is absolutely ridiculous

They have a great foreign policy plank.

Their platform is eclectic, to say the least. From a libertarian perspective, I’d say about half of it is pretty good (at least compared to the D’s and R’s), while the other half of it is really bad.
