That argument is reminiscent of those who misunderstand the LP’s current clunky abortion plank to read that the party has no position on abortion, rather than that government should be kept out of the abortion decision.

“… i’ve discovered that ‘Libertarians’ like to bash each other for ‘not being libertarian enough’…what does that even mean? I was under the impression the ‘big umbrella’ is choice. Letting people live their own life as they see fit, without forcibly interfering with the equal right of others to do the same.”

You are making a categorical error. Libertarians believe that government should let people live their own life as they see fit, without forcibly interfering with the equal right of others to do the same. To the extent that allegedly (l)ibertarian politicians agree with this, we may judge them to be “libertarian enough” or “not libertarian enough” according to our own thresholds. What you seem to be calling for instead is for Libertarian party members, delegates, voters and supporters to let politicians run their campaigns as they see fit, to compete as to which of them get to interfere in the lives of others using government force and in which ways, including under the Libertarian Party banner. That’s not at all the same thing.

  3. Andy October 12, 2016

Timothy, yes, I am a Libertarian Party member, and have been one since 1996, and I was a delegate at the national convention in Orlando. I voted for Darryl W. Perry on both presidential ballots, and I voted for Will Coley on the first vice presidential ballot, and for Larry Sharpe on the second vice presidential ballot.

  4. Timothy October 12, 2016

Hey Andy, serious question. You say “Thanks LP delegates for fucking the party over by nominating these ass clowns.” so I have to ask, are you a member, officially, of the Libertarian Party for your state? See cause…the state delegates picked, and at our state convention here in Washington, we picked delegates to go. They went and voted. Did all of them vote Johnson? No, which is why he didn’t win ‘outright’.

I voted for Johnson, but I liked Austin more. My choice was pragmatic.

So if you want to be involved in picking the nominee for the Libertarian Party, join your state party, get involved. It’s easy to armchair quarterback if you weren’t there.

Also Weld was a hard sell to the delegates. But we still picked him.

Is Johnson the ‘perfect’ Libertarian? No, but i’ve discovered that ‘Libertarians’ like to bash each other for ‘not being libertarian enough’…what does that even mean? I was under the impression the ‘big umbrella’ is choice. Letting people live their own life as they see fit, without forcibly interfering with the equal right of others to do the same.

Andy: ” . . . Not if they knew that Jeb was dead in the water. Maybe the long term plan has been to install Hillary. . . . ”

The sad part is that you actually believe this.

  6. Tony From Long Island October 10, 2016

When will the conspiracy theories stop Andy?

If the LP is involved, leave it. make all LP members happy.

You act as though it were some sort of secret that Billy Bush was related to the Bush family.

So, the Bush family set this all up back in 2005? You are twisted man.

You need to get out more. Join a bowling league, play bingo . . anything but being hunkered down in your bunker with your tin-foil hat.

Campaign strategy: Time for the pivot: (It’s too bad we didn’t lay the advertising groundwork first.)

The Johnson campaign should take the recent Trump revelations into account, with a recast approach to the race, it’s time to pivot:

The GJ campaign should treat this race now as a two-way race between Johnson and Clinton. Trump cannot be considered for POTUS by women, nor anyone who respects women, nor by minorities, nor by anyone who respects minorities, nor by the LGBT community, nor by anyone who respects indivudual rights. Trump cannot win and he is out of the race for all practical purposes.

Hillary Clinton and Gary Johnson are the only candidates on the ballot who are qualified on paper to be President of the United States.

Johnson is fiscally responsible; inernationally a non-interventionist, protecting America and our interests by ending our role as policeman of the world; socially, he respects the rights of all Americans to make their own personal choices. On every one of these issues, Gary Johnson is far better than Hillary Clinton, so Gary Johnson is the best choice in this two-person race going forward.

If the Bushes were involved, don’t you think they’d have used it to help out Jeb?”

Not if they knew that Jeb was dead in the water. Maybe the long term plan has been to install Hillary.

Jeb could always run again in the future, plus they have other Bush family members waiting in the wings.

  9. Dave October 8, 2016

Plus we’re getting into him being all but accused of sexual assault now. I doubt he’s that loyal. Though I think its possible Trump may have been intended to sabotage the GOP as much as possible and help Clinton beat them. But he did better than anyone thought possible, himself included, and somewhere along the line decided to run for real.

Fun times. Looking forward to the histories written about this election in the years to come.

  10. Dave October 8, 2016

If the Bushes were involved, don’t you think they’d have used it to help out Jeb? Had they gotten rid of Trump early on in the campaign, before he really wounded Jeb he might have been the nominee, though I’d place money on Rubes.

I don’t know, certainly I think this was coordinated by the Clinton campaign(just as the very likely leaks to come will be) but Trump must be a very good friend to them if he’s willing to wreck his reputation and quite possibly his business to get her in the white house.

  11. Andy October 8, 2016

Billy Bush does not really give a flying fuck how this makes him look. He Is already a “made” guy as a member of the Bush family.

I bet “they” have known about this recording for a long time, and “they” have purposely been sitting on it all of this time.

I also would not be surprised if Donald Trump is in on the scam. He may actually just be a willing participant in getting Hillary Clinton in the White House. Remember that he was (is) a long time friend of Hillary and Bill, and Donald’s daughter Ivanika cites Chelsea Clinton as one of her best friends.

Note that the Bush family are also long time friends of the Clinton family, and note that William Weld is long time friends of both the Bush and Clinton families.

  12. Dave October 8, 2016

I doubt Billy Bush was involved. This leak does not leave him looking particularly good. He’s catching a lot of flack.

Plus this was in 2005, when no one took Trump seriously, so why the need to discredit him? Since it took 11 years to release it couldn’t have been for blackmail purposes.

  13. Andy October 8, 2016

George HW Bush, the patriarch of the Bush family, endorsed Hillary Clinton for President.

Sources: Bush 41 says he will vote for Clinton

MY COMMENT: Let’s not forget that Libertarian Party Vice Presidential candidate, William Weld, is life long buddies with Hillary Clinton, and Libertarian Party Presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, thinks that Hillary Clinton is a wonderful public servant.

THIS ELECTION IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST SCAM OF AN ELECTION IN MY LIFE. EVEN THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY IS A PART OF THE SCAM.

  14. Andy October 8, 2016

    Who is Billy Bush?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Bush

From Wikipedia: “William Hall ‘Billy’ Bush (born October 13, 1971) is an American radio and television host. He hosted The Billy Bush Show, a nationally syndicated radio show that airs throughout the U.S. Bush is also the primary host of Access Hollywood, a syndicated entertainment-news show and a co-host of the third hour of The Today Show. He is a member of the Bush family.

William Hall Bush was born in Manhattan, New York City,[2] the son of Josephine (née Bradley) and Jonathan Bush, whose older brother George H. W. Bush was the 41st U.S. president. Bush attended middle school at St. Bernard’s School and high school at St. George’s School in Rhode Island,[1] and in 1994 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Government from Colby College in Waterville, Maine,[1][3] where he was also a two-time captain of the college’s men’s lacrosse team.”

MY COMMENT: Well surprise, surprise, Billy Bush is a member of the famous Bush family. The same one that does not like Donald Trump.

  16. Andy October 8, 2016

It turns out that this recording was made by Billy Bush,

    Published on Oct 7, 2016
“4:25 PM PST — Billy Bush just told Variety, “Obviously I’m embarrassed and ashamed. It’s no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago — I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I’m very sorry.”
Donald Trump talked to Billy Bush about trying to bang chicks back in 2005, but Trump says the conversation was clearly private, one-on-one locker room banter that was recorded by an “Access Hollywood” crew.
The Washington Post somehow obtained “Access Hollywood” footage from 2005, where Trump talked in graphic terms about how easy it was for celebs like himself to seduce women, even saying, “Grab them by the p***y. You can do anything.”
The Post says Trump was recently married to Melania at the time the conversation was recorded on a bus near the “Days of Our Lives” set.
Trump issued a statement, saying, “This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course – not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended.”

  17. Darcy G Richardson October 8, 2016

Richard is right. There will be all sorts of scenarios discussed within the next two or three days, many of them involving “faithless” electors.

In addition to Sen. Mike Lee asking Trump to step aside, as mentioned by Dave in the previous post, within the past few hours Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz have both pulled their support for Trump. So, too, has former Gov. Jon Huntsman.

At the very least, Trump’s extremely crude and vulgar comments regarding women has probably put the Beehive State in play for longshot favorite-son candidate Evan McMullin. Coupled with rumors that Kahlil Byrd’s new “Stand Up America” Super PAC has already raised a few million dollars to support the former CIA officer’s candidacy — and hasn’t spent a penny yet — there’s an increasingly strong possibility that the native-born McMullin will carry Utah in November.

Unfortunately, that state’s six electoral votes probably could have been Gary Johnson’s for the taking were it not for his recent gaffes.

  18. Jill Pyeatt October 8, 2016

    I love Redsilver J.

I still think this won’t hurt Trump’s campaign, though.

  19. Dave October 8, 2016

I think this will have an effect. GOP leaders are distancing themselves from Trump immediately. Pretty much everyone in the Utah GOP has withdrawn support from him. Sen. Lee went so far as to call in him to drop out. I can’t see Trump doing this, so I think you’ll see a lot of Republicans voting for an alternative to the toxic top of the ticket. That’s going to be Johnson mostly, though McMullian could gain some from it as well.

The big thing is I think despite all his gaffes, Johnson is all but certain to cross 5% now. Which makes the race for 2020 very interesting. I am curious if we’ll see any more open defections to Johnson from the Republican establishment. Folks like Ryan won’t do it, since that’s building up a different party and they do not want the LP to reach 5% (and be taken seriously in 2020) but I could see Romney doing so. Maybe even Jeb, whose apparently hinted at it.

  20. Jill Pyeatt October 8, 2016

Sadly, Richard, I don’t agree that this recording will change the election. The people who supported Trump before will still make excuses and vote for him. He could kill a puppy and they’d still vote for him.

I feel the same way about Hillary supporters. Despite her atrocious record of dishonesty, lying, and an obvious health challenge, her supporters will continue to support her.

I’ve never seen anything like this. I’m horrified at the unthinking people who surround me. I just want this awful campaign season to be over.

  21. Richard Winger October 8, 2016

It is now 10 pm pacific time, Friday night. All the news about Trump’s bad manners concerning women that broke tonight are going to be a game-changer for this presidential election. Even though it is very late east coast time, various professsors and journalists stationed on the east coast are up, writing stories about whether the Republican Party can replace Trump with some other presidential nominee.

Among other things, this could upset the presidential debates.

  22. EPearson October 7, 2016

That pretty much sums up my opinion of Trump, a Democrat posing as a Republican. That also pretty much sums up my opinion of Clinton, a Socialist posing as a Democrat. Guess we’re all being played….

I don’t really care about the candidates nominated by the Democrats and Republicans. We already know that they are going to suck. I expect more out of Libertarian Party candidates. I do not consider Johnson or Weld to be legitimate libertarians, and therefore I do not consider them to be worth my vote. They are establishment shills posing as Libertarians.

  24. EPearson October 7, 2016

Re: “Ass clowns” Do you mean as opposed to the criminal and racist ass clowns nominated by the duopoly? I wouldn’t know because I’m not a registered Libertarian, but I’m voting Libertarian this election, and the ONLY reason is because the LP nominated two people who actually have something in common with the majority of Americans this time, and (BONUS) have integrity! It really sounds like most of the posts on this page spewing venom against the LP and their candidates are actually Democrats and Republicans pulling off political smear campaigns. If not, then Libertarians are becoming much less inclusive than they are rumored to be! I’ve been to quite a few rallies with genuine LP members who are supporting the nominees and finding common ground (Like their candidates are trying to do) instead of having adolescent rants and being divisive.

    Thanks, BR.

I’ll give it an A-. He was more comprehensive in handling questions than previous interviews. I would like to see him have more precise sentence structure, less meandering. Pence actually does this pretty well.

His BEST performance for me was with Samantha Bee, though.

  26. Richard Winger October 7, 2016

All the Libertarians who are unhappy with the presidential nominee should keep in mind that US House is voted on throughout the nation. Every eligible voter is free to vote for both president and US House, all across the nation. The US House elections are just as important as the presidential election. Out of the 436 districts, only 122 have a Libertarian running. There were dozens and dozens of seats in which any Libertarian could have snagged a US House nomination with no petition and no fee. So for those Libertarians who are unhappy with the presidential election, always remember the many Libertarian US House nominations sitting out there for the taking.

“Mr. Brown, or whoever you are,”

Who else would I be? Is there a conspiracy theory about that too?

    “stupidity of guns.”

Tell that to the military, the police, and other government agencies with guns. Tell it to the millions of people who use guns to defend themselves, and the millions more who have them to defend freedom from government encroachment. Tell it to the millions of people in countries where rebels start revolutions – and sometimes win them – by taking guns from their governments’ police and militaries. Tell it to the millions of people who have been killed by their own governments after their nations carried out civilian disarmament.

I disagree. And I also disagree that 2% or 5% is worth selling out for.

“No other LP candidate on that stage in Orlando would be over 1% in the polls right now”

Don’t be silly. Jill Stein is well above that. And if polling is done the same way it is done now, supposing that Jim Hedges of the Prohibition Party and Monica Moorehead of the (communist) Workers World Party were the two other candidates in the election right now, they would get 3-4% each.

“National Presidential Poll Asks About Four Presidential Candidates, and Then Asks Same Respondents to Choose Among Clinton, Trump, Prohibition, and Workers World Nominees
Posted on October 5, 2016 by Richard Winger

On October 5, Falrleigh Dickinson University released a presidential poll, which asks about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Gary Johnson, and Jill Stein. The results: Clinton 45%; Trump 36%; Johnson 11%; Stein 3%; other 1%; don’t know 3%; refused 1%.

Then the same respondents were asked, suppose the only presidential candidates were Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jim Hedges of the Prohibition Party, and Monica Moorehead of the Workers World Party. The purpose was to see if the support for Johnson and Stein is genuine, or whether the respondents were telling pollsters they would vote for anyone other than Clinton and Trump. Those results: Clinton 47%; Trump 35%; Hedges 4%; Moorehead 3%; other 3% (the respondents had to volunteer that); don’t know 7%; refused 2%.

Scroll down to the third chart to see those results. Thanks to Political Wire for the link.”

The Libertarian candidate “X” would probably do better than that due to increased popularity of the libertarian label in general in recent years since Ron Paul’s most recent runs.

Mr. Brown, or whoever you are, it’s way to late in the week for me to philosophize with you about the stupidity of guns. I only post from work and that’s m-f 8 to 5 eastern.

My “.05%” should have been “.5” Whether it’s .05% or the .99999% Gov. Johnson got 4 years ago, It’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. I voted LP for POTUS in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2012. I might again this year, One reason (among many) that I went back to the DP is because of the Insistence of the LP to nominate candidates who wouldn’t be taken seriously and never receive more than 1%. I am not a 100 / 100 scorer and neither are a large majority of LP members.

No other LP candidate on that stage in Orlando would be over 1% in the polls right now and certainly would not receive more than 1% in November.

“I have a much broader definition of “well-regulated” than most.”

Please don’t tell me you are so stupid as to believe that anyone felt a need to amend the constitution to say that government-controlled forces have a right to have guns. If a sentence said “A well educated populace being necessary to the civic society of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear books shall not be abridged” would you take that to mean that only those who are deemed to be “well educated” by the state are allowed to have books? Hopefully not. The operative clause is the latter part of the sentence, and the first part is not supposed to be exclusionary.

  33. Mr. Brown October 7, 2016

    Tony, Tony, Tone….

The LP has been well above 0.05% in presidential races ever since the 1970s, you are off by an order of magnitude. And if those results had been as “irrelevant” as you want to pretend, the fake libertarians would never have been attracted to run as LP candidates to begin with. You don’t see a rush of moderate Democrats clamoring to run as Green Party candidates, do you? The real question is whether going from 0.5% to 1% or 2% or even 5% (but probably not the latter in reality) is worth selling out what made the party attract anyone’s attention in the first place. I’m going to go with NO.

Not Trump is the best thing Johnson/Weld have to say for themselves. Oh and “integrity” in quotes, meaning of course just the opposite.

    https://cdn.meme.am/instances/55147947.jpg

What a disgrace. Clinton, Castle, Stein, De La Fuente and McMullin are also not Trump. The empty and ironically quoted “integrity” is substance free. The party is not even mentioned, which may be a good thing in this case.

After this sorry campaign is over, Johnson can make lots of money doing commercials that make fun of his lack of knowledge of basic facts. I can see it now…

“Hi do you remember me? If you are like me you have a hard time remembering anything. I’m Gary Johnson, the guy who ran for president and could not remember the names of foreign leaders or global conflict hotspots. But now, with google glasses I don’t have to. They just project the facts and names I am struggling to remember on the inside of my glasses where only I can see them. Plus they make me look smarter too! Hurry and get yours …”

“Hi I’m Gary Johnson. I’m here to tell you all about our new marijuana-reservatrol lozenge, which helps you maintain your memory while you get zonked on weed. If you are like me, a multiple times every day marijuana user, you may have some memory problems and be embarrassed not remembering people’s names or other basic facts, especially as you get older. But don’t worry, now we have the marijuana-reservatrol lozenge to help you out! Hurry up and order yours right now before you forget!”

While Johnson cashes in on his growing notoriety for being ill informed, Weld can go on to get the appointment as ambassador to Mexico from Hillary Clinton, or maybe help Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush rebuild the Republican Party. Then again maybe he will stick around and run for the top of the ticket as a Libertarian in 2020. Or, why not all three?
