Dear Region 1 Members:

This is my periodic status update in order to keep you up to date on matters concerning the Libertarian National Committee and my involvement as your elected Regional representative.  Remember, you can also find copies of referenced reports as well as a lot of other helpful information at the Region 1 website.

Following are some of the major issues discussed on the LNC Business List as well as the April LNC meeting since my last newsletter to you.  I highly encourage you to follow this list LNC Archives of Email Discussions and Votes (can be viewed by author, date, subject and thread) and keep track of what your National Party representatives are doing as I can only cover the major items here.

Please note that the next in-person LNC meeting will be in Kansas City, Missouri  on August 19-20, 2017.  You can find details here.  The minutes for the April are still in draft phase- but can be viewed here. The finalized 2016 Convention minutes can be found here.  Please note that the appendixes to the minutes contain very interesting reports such as the most recent Ballot Access Report.

Platform and Bylaws Committee Appointments:  These appointments were made at the last LNC meeting as follows:

Platform:

The Bylaws Committee is complete and has begun meeting.  The Platform Committee is on hold pending appointments from qualifying states.  In Region 1, Alaska has appointed Carolyn Clift but not yet named an alternate.  Washington and Colorado have yet to name their appointments nor has either affiliate given a time when this can be expected.  The deadline for appointments is not until February 28, 2018.

Resolution on Cuban libertarian prisoners:  After the failure of the first version, a Resolution was passed that you can read about here.

Historical Preservation Committee:  This project has had a flurry of activity with the latest activity been an LNC motion to move the records to Colorado so that I might easily manage.  You can read about that here.  I ask you earnestly to consider contributing to the fund to help pay for this entire project.  Preserving our history is vitally important.  Here is a downloadable form you can use to contribute or you may do so at this link.  We have raised nearly $4,000 of the $10,000 needed.  I know that if each Region 1 reader gave a small amount (or more if you can) we could raise this on our own.  You can read my last report as Chair of this Committee here.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LAST LNC MEETING

An incident happened last month with a post that many members found objectionable, and it was determined that there was a hole in our review process in which the Committee tasked with the review, failed to review the post, primarily due to them all being LNC members getting ready for this meeting.  A review committee was appointed to recommend protocols so that this process might be improved.  The LNC members of this Committee are Daniel Hayes, Steven Nekhaila, and Brett Bittner.  Subsequently, the two non-LNC members appointed were Elizabeth Van Horn and Alison Foxall.

Committee to Review 2016 Campaign:  Representatives from Paladin Strategies presented their bid via teleconference and fielded questions. Some members have expressed to me that they felt that these representatives were not treated as respectfully as they could have been.  After debate, their proposal was defeated.  I abstained on this vote as I did not yet have a definitive opinion though I personally interviewed the gentlemen and had a good feeling about them.  The lack of prior provable experience  or a website was a factor in my abstention.  I think they may be of help to try on a limited basis to assist with social media targeting.

Attempt to Build DC Relationships to Get Libertarian Position Appointments:  A motion to this effect was passed.  While I am skeptical of success, I believe we need to continue to try new things.

OTHER NOTEWORTHY NEWS:

The double-matching fundraising drive for Ballot Access was a success with the full $33,900 raised which will now be TRIPLED to $101,700!  There will be a further ballot access fundraising drive to raise an additional $25,000 during the rest of the year to obtain the anticipated $130,000 needed.
