Ballot access is one of the most critical functions of the national party. “Ballot access” is political speak for “getting our candidates on ballots.”
Every cycle, the Libertarian Party works hard to get our candidates on as many ballots across the country as we can.
As of December 2018, we have ballot access for our 2020 Presidential candidate in 33 states plus D.C. This is the most we’ve ever had at this stage in the election cycle.
In 2019 and 2020, we’ll be working on ballot access in those remaining 17 states.
If you want as many Americans as possible to have the opportunity to vote for Libertarian candidates in 2020, please contribute to the Ballot Access Fund via this page.

The Libertarian Party came out of the 2018 midterm elections with the best ballot access that any third party has achieved at this stage in the election cycle since 1914!
We currently have ballot access for our 2020 presidential ticket in 33 states and DC.
That is exactly double the 17 states in which the LP had presidential ballot access for 1992 after the 1990 midterm elections.
The LP has made great progress on the ballot access front over the past 28 years.
One of the national party’s goals for 2020 is for our presidential nominee to be on EVERY ballot in America.
That means we need to achieve ballot access in EVERY state.
Over the next 2 years, we will be pursuing it aggressively in those remaining 17.
Our first target is achieving ballot access in Alaska. Soon after that, we plan to focus on Arkansas.
We have the nation’s experts on ballot access working on our team. We just need to provide them with the resources they need to get the job done.

1. The presidential ticket gets more media coverage when it’s on in 50 states than when it’s on in 33, and it gets media attention local candidates can’t get. This in turn gets *them* media attention and votes they can’t get on their own.
2. It’s the job of candidates to fundraise for their own campaigns. The national party has a limited set of functions, and fundraising to have presidential ballot access in as many places as possible is one of those. The presidential ticket is the only one the national party nominates and the only one it can withdraw the nomination from. All other candidates are nominated by state parties or primaries or individually get themselves on the ballot.
Even if that was otherwise true, it’s not available for that. The money belongs to the donors until they donate it, and each donation depends on a specific pitch. Having the LP have a presidential candidate on every state ballot in the country appeals to some donors. Their second choice in many cases is not to donate the money to local LP candidates, it’s to keep that money in their pocket.
Access doesn’t mean anything if we can’t give the customer a libertarian to vote for. The cost of access should be spent on candidates in states which already have access.
