We Reject Deplatforming

I just purchased IPR.  We have a vast number of archived posts.  Past owners have attempted to filter out libel, slander, overtly criminal posts, material that makes no sense at all, and the like.  If you think we have missed something, please speak up.  On the other hand, note that we are in the United States of America, not some European backwater.  America has rigid support for freedom of speech.  Your owner is not going to travel to Europe, so you cannot threaten me with European laws.  If some of our freedom of speech contradicts your laws, you have our sympathies and the hope that someday you, too, will live in a free country without needing to relocate.

On the other hand there is a very recent campaign to ‘deplatform’ people whose speech has become unpopular.  Instead of disagreeing with them, or ignoring them, deplatform advocates want to make it impossible for unpopular speech to reach the public, by denying them a platform.

To those advocates, I say: Deplatforming is UnAmerican to its rotten core.  Some of you have heard the line:  We keep our country free with five boxes.  The soap box.  The ballot box.  The briefcase box.  The jury box.  The cartridge box.  When you scheme to deny people the soap box and thence the ballot box, you are making use of the other boxes more likely.  That’s a bad idea.  You should stop.

The Constitution Party denies climate change, anthropogenic at least, in its national platform, so that would certainly seem to put CP members at a speech disadvantage here in the comments, if not in the coverage; but I can also see Greens eagerly embracing the 1619 Project and its associated, false, revisionist historical claims about colonial America and the racist founding of the United States, so perhaps they’re equally likely to succumb to censorship.

I stop at nonsense, e.g. holocaust deniers, Trump wonners, climate change deniers, ‘the Revolutionary War happened because the English wanted to ban slavery in the colonies”…

Does this include Holocaust deniers and people with very different views about climate change than you hold? Not trying to be prickly just really interested in how much diversity you plan to allow.

Good. If a person does not like a certain political party they can just not read about it.

And, therefore, we will continue to cover political parties that some people dislike.
