American Solidarity Party Names Lauren Onak as Vice Presidential Nominee; Party Convention Scheduled for this Weekend

The American Solidarity Party will meet in Plano, Texas, later this week for the party’s first in-person convention, where delegates are expected to discuss party business and hear from the organization’s newly selected presidential ticket.

Delegates are meeting several days after the American Solidarity Party announced over Twitter that its members had formally selected Lauren Onak of Massachusetts to run alongside Peter Sonski, who was chosen as the presidential nominee through an internal primary conducted earlier this month.

Onak, who is originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, lives in the Boston Metrowest suburbs region. She works as a fertility instructor specializing in the Boston cross check method, an awareness-based approach to natural fertility started in the 1970s. According to a biography from the American Solidarity Party, she studied at Barnard College of Columbia University and received her Master of Arts in Adolescent Education from Hunter College.

Both Sonski and Onak will greet supporters later this week, with Onak formally delivering her acceptance speech as part of the convention procedes. The American Solidarity Party also alluded to a potential Twitter Space with the two candidates sometime later this year.

A full convention schedule has been released, with the American Solidarity Party YouTube account segmenting specific events ahead of time into a series of scheduled videos for those unable to attend.

Discussion topics include “Local control versus State control” with Linda Curtis, “Consistent Life Ethic” with Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, “The Political Economy of Distributism” with Alex Salter, and “The ASP & Social Justice State” with John Medaille. The convention keynote speaker is Leah Libresco Sargeant, a freelance writer and former news writer for FiveThirtyEight who also frequently discusses Catholicism and other forms of feminism not typical of the current definition.

At the start of June, members of the organization selected Peter Sonski of Connecticut as their presidential nominee via internal elections conducted thru ranked-choice voting. Sonski won on the first ballot with 328 votes or 52% of those cast.

In conversation with Independent Political Report, an official with the American Solidarity Party explained that during the selection process for Sonski, party members also elected 48 delegates from varying regions. These 48 delegates convened in a virtual meeting on the weekend leading up to the convention, where they unanimously selected Onak at Sonski’s urging. The delegates additionally adopted a new party platform.
