American Solidarity Party Names Lauren Onak as Vice Presidential Nominee; Party Convention Scheduled for this Weekend

On Friday afternoon, members of the American Solidarity Party will convene in Plano, Texas, for three days to discuss party business and hear from their newly selected presidential ticket. The convention meets several days after the American Solidarity Party announced over Twitter that its members had selected Lauren Onak of Massachusetts to join Peter Sonski, who was chosen as the presidential nominee earlier this month through a primary election conducted internally.

Onak, originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, now lives with her family in the Boston Metrowest suburbs. She works as a fertility instructor specializing in the Boston cross check method, an awareness-based approach to natural fertility started in the 1970s. According to the American Solidarity Party, she studied at Barnard College of Columbia University and received her Master of Arts in Adolescent Education from Hunter College.

Both Sonski and Onak will greet supporters Friday evening across from the convention site, with Onak giving her acceptance speech later this weekend. The American Solidarity Party Twitter account also alluded to a potential Twitter Space with the two candidates later this year.

Members attending can find a full schedule of the day’s events available ahead of the convention. The official American Solidarity Party YouTube account also segmented specific events ahead of time into a series of scheduled videos for those unable to attend. Included in this lineup are topics like “Local control versus State control” with Linda Curtis, “Consistent Life Ethic” with Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, “The Political Economy of Distributism” with Alex Salter, and “The ASP & Social Justice State” with John Medaille. The convention keynote speaker is Leah Libresco Sargeant, a freelance writer and former news writer for FiveThirtyEight who frequently discusses Catholicism and other forms of feminism not typical of the current definition.

At the start of June, members of the organization selected Peter Sonski of Connecticut as their presidential nominee via internal elections conducted thru ranked-choice voting. Sonski won on the first ballot with 328 votes or 52% of those cast. In conversation with Independent Political Report, an official with the American Solidarity Party explained that during the selection process for Sonski, party members also elected 48 delegates from varying regions. These 48 delegates convened in a virtual meeting on the weekend leading up to the convention, where they unanimously selected Onak at Sonski’s urging. The delegates additionally adopted a new party platform.

The American Solidarity Party convention will occur from Friday to Sunday in historic downtown Plano. Viewers and members not in attendance can stream the weekend’s events through the American Solidarity Party YouTube account.
