Reform Party Sees Opportunity for Growth Following Republican Party Platform Changes

The Reform Party announced this week that it is seeking to capitalize on recent major changes to the Republican Party platform after Republicans removed over 50 pages of content, including references to issues important to the Reform Party, to more closely align with the aims of former President Donald Trump.

In a press release on Wednesday, the Reform Party called the new Republican Party platform “weak” and noted that Republicans cut a considerable number of issues also important to the Reform Party following a recent meeting of the Republican Party’s platform committee. In particular, the Reform Party references several policy issues it championed in the 90s under Ross Perot, namely term limits, deficit reduction, balancing the federal budget, and the child tax credit.

The party said that its original platform under Perot was “neutered” as a result of these issues being integrated into the Republican platform as part of the “Contract with America,” a legislative agenda first introduced by Republicans in 1994 and continuing throughout the decade. However, the Reform Party adds that Republicans have since cut all of these issues from their most recent platform and that they view it as an opportunity for growth around these specific positions.

“The Reform Party was given back its full toolbox of issues,” party chair Nicholas Hensley stated in the release. “Fiscal responsibility. Balanced budget. Smaller government. Ethics reform. Election reform. Lobbying reform. Modernizing the child tax credit. Constitutional Rights include 2A among others. Donald Trump threw all of these issues at our feet and walked off. It is time to work.”

In addition to the policy positions important to the Reform Party, the party also noted that the Republicans removed language relating to the Second Amendment, abortion, and small government, which they say has since been adopted by other third parties.
