Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Receives Secret Service Protection Following Attempt on President Donald Trump

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will start receiving U.S. Secret Service protection following an attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump over the weekend, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Monday.

“In light of this weekend’s events, the President has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy Jr.,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced during a White House press briefing held on Monday. Mayorkas also mentioned that the Secret Service had increased and would continue to enhance security measures for Trump, although he said he could not provide specifics.

Following the announcement of his Secret Service protection, Kennedy thanked President Joe Biden via social media, saying, “Thank you to President Biden for granting me Secret Service protection. And I am so grateful to Gavin deBecker & Associates for keeping me safe for the last 15 months of my Presidential campaign.”

The Kennedy campaign has been urging the Biden administration since last year to provide him with Secret Service protection but has been repeatedly denied, even in the face of previous altercations. Until now, the campaign had outsourced Kennedy’s security needs to Gavin de Becker & Associates, a private security consulting firm.

According to FEC filings from the beginning of the campaign, the Kennedy campaign has spent nearly $3 million on security services from Gavin de Becker & Associates.
