Mississippi Sample Ballot Now Reflects Only Nine Presidential Tickets

A sample ballot produced by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office now reflects that nine presidential candidates will appear on this year’s state ballot, a change from the list of ten initially qualified candidates released last week.

On Tuesday, Independent Political Report noted that the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office had produced a list of qualifying presidential and vice presidential candidates. At that time, the list, which broke down presidential and vice presidential candidates separately, included tickets from the Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, Green, and Constitution parties, as well as three independent presidential tickets that qualified by petition.

In addition to these eight tickets, Dr. Cornel West qualified through the state’s Natural Law Party, and Party for Socialism and Liberation nominee Claudia De la Cruz qualified to appear as an independent. However, both presidential candidates were missing their respective vice presidential candidates.

A sample ballot now available on the Secretary of State’s website shows some slight changes from the previously published list. The most major of them is the exclusion of Cornel West and his nomination through the Natural Law Party. It’s not yet known why the West campaign was not allowed on the ballot, though his campaign’s ballot access map indicated as recently as this morning that it was still awaiting confirmation from the state.

The other notable change is the inclusion of Party for Socialism and Liberation vice presidential nominee Karina Garcia, who was missing from the earlier list. Like De la Cruz, Garcia will appear as an independent. All other presidential and vice presidential candidates, as well as their listings on the ballot, remain unchanged.
