The Boston branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation has been leading grassroots efforts in Massachusetts to pressure Democratic Governor Maura Healey to implement immigration policies that would effectively designate the state as a “sanctuary state.” Since the start of February, the party has hosted events across Massachusetts and organized two rallies in Boston.
Last month, the Boston PSL launched a campaign urging Healey to limit state cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. As part of this effort, the party introduced a petition outlining formal policy demands, which it states has gathered over 7,000 signatures. In addition, PSL has held meetings in places such as Lowell, Worcester, Springfield, and Boston, co-hosted training sessions on responding to federal immigration enforcement, and organized open mic events to highlight the experiences of immigrant communities.
The party’s efforts follow remarks made by Healey in an interview last month, where she stated that Massachusetts is “not a sanctuary state,” adding that “officials here follow the law.” That same day, federal immigration agents were seen detaining an individual in Chelsea and making multiple arrests in East Boston.
“Healey has done nothing but parrot Trump and his racist anti-immigrant agenda while cutting housing access for all working class families,” the PSL petition reads. “These are pro-billionaire attacks on the whole working class — and Healey is siding with the billionaires.”
The petition includes several specific demands, such as ending state and local law enforcement collaboration with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It also calls on Healey to use her executive authority to prevent all state agencies and employees from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Additionally, it urges state officials to avoid using what PSL describes as racially charged language when discussing immigration, including referring to immigrants as “criminals” or a “strain on state resources.” The petition further calls for the preservation of Massachusetts’ Right to Shelter laws and the expansion of public housing access.
The Boston PSL has also staged two rallies—one outside the Massachusetts State House on February 9 and another in East Boston’s Central Square Park on February 16. The second rally was intentionally scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of the 2017 “Day Without an Immigrant” boycotts.
A February report by Northeastern University’s independent student newspaper estimated that over 300 people attended the first rally. Independent Political Report has not yet confirmed attendance numbers for the second event.
Notably, while Healey has twice stated that Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, a 2017 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling, Lunn v. Commonwealth, determined that “Massachusetts law provides no authority for court officers to arrest and hold an individual because of a federal immigration detainer.” The ruling has since restricted the ability of state and local officials to assist with federal immigration enforcement.

This is not surprising since the Party for Socialism and Liberation is a Marxist political party and Marxists have long used mass immugration as a part of divide and conquer and Cloward-Piven strategies to further the Marxist agenda.
