Green National Committee Names Halley Karas to Congressional Campaign Committee

Delegates to the Green National Committee have elected Halley Karas of Michigan to fill a vacancy on the Green Congressional Campaign Committee. A special election was held earlier this month to fill the position.

According to the Green National Committee vote tracker, voting closed last Monday with 59 votes cast by national delegates representing 32 Green state affiliates and eligible caucuses. Among them were members of the Women’s, Youth, and Lavender Caucuses. Delegates to the Green National Committee are typically selected by state parties during their respective annual conventions.

National delegates supported Karas’ nomination with 52 votes in favor, while seven abstained. No voting members opposed her nomination. The race was conducted using ranked-choice voting; however, Karas was the only candidate considered ballot-qualified for the purpose of the election. Single write-in votes were also cast for Clyde Shabazz, Gloria Mattera, and Jennifer Sullivan.

The Green Party established the Green Congressional Campaign Committee in March 2024 to support Congressional and Senate candidates who either won their respective Green primaries or received an endorsement from their state party. Previously, the party operated both a Green Senatorial Campaign Committee and a Green House of Representatives Campaign Committee. However, a vote combined the two groups to address concerns related to resources and volunteer capacity.

The motion that created the Committee also specified that the seven members elected to the Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2023 would transition to the newly combined entity, with the standing rules governing Committee elections formally taking effect this year.

What about the Men’s, Adult, and Straight/Cis Caucuses? Surely the Green’s dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion require their existence and necessitate their representation at the national committee… Or couldn’t they find any men, adults or straight cis people anywhere in their party?
