Elon Musk Threatens to Launch “America Party” Over Spending Bill

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk floated the possibility of launching a new political party this week in response to the “Big Beautiful Bill,” a proposed federal spending package backed by President Donald Trump and congressional leaders. Musk had previously gauged public interest in creating a new political party in June.

“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” Musk wrote on X on Monday. “Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

Musk also reposted a screenshot on Tuesday morning from Kalshi, an online financial exchange and prediction market, showing the odds of him forming a new party in 2025 rising to 41% from just five percent the previous day. As of this article, those odds have climbed to approximately 45 percent.

In addition to threatening the creation of a new party, Musk has pledged to support primary challenges against Republican lawmakers who vote in favor of the bill. He also made a donation to the campaign of Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, a vocal critic of the package, at the urging of former Libertarian Rep. Justin Amash.

This is not the first time Musk has teased the formation of a new party in connection to his opposition to the bill, which he described earlier in June as a “disgusting abomination.” Following his departure from the Trump administration as a special advisor and head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk polled public support on X for a party that “represents the 80% in the middle,” with a majority of over five million users supporting the idea.

The “Big Beautiful Bill” passed the Senate on Tuesday by a 51–50 vote and now returns to the House for further consideration.

    George:

Actually, since Elmo overpaid for Twitter, which he of course didn’t found, he fired many of the experts already there.

And, a good L/libertarian should note most of Musk’s previous enterprises, above all but not limited to Tesla, were financially successful because of sucking off the government teat.

Except that he knows how to build rockets, cars, and a relatively uncensored social media site. You do not do it yourself. You hire lots of experts.

I don’t place much weight into his statements, for one simple reason:

It’s a helluvalot easier to build rockets and satellites than a political party.

I ought to know as I have done both in my life.

For Musk to succeed at building a third party, he’s going to have to navigate 51 sets of ballot access laws, generate enough groundswell support to produce any viability, find good candidates, and do all of that within the confines of federal and state campaign finance laws–all in a system that will oppose every step along the way because it would upset their gig.

Thank you Elon Musk for donating to Thomas Massie’s campaign. And kudos to Justin Amash for suggesting it!

Poll did not ask people where they thought the center was.

I suspect Mr. Musk is blowing off steam. Any party founded by him will fare no better than the party founded by Ross Perot… probably even less so since he is ineligible to head up a national ticket.

Firstly Tom Hoefling and 4+ other people would like to have a word about that name & secondly there already is a party for all of America that is fiscally responsible & moderate. It’s the Unity Party.
