The Green Party of the United States denounced a Supreme Court decision this week allowing federal immigration officials to resume stops in the Los Angeles area based on factors such as race, language, location, or type of work.
In a September 9 remark on social media, the party shared a statement from the New York Immigration Coalition and compared the use of racial profiling to kidnapping. “The Green Party condemns the latest outrageous decision by the rogue US Supreme Court, which by a 6 to 3 vote, ruled in favor of Trump and ICE using racial profiling as the basis for kidnapping people off the streets of America,” the party wrote.
The New York Immigration Coalition statement said the ruling “gives ICE the green light to racially profile immigrants and cities with a large majority of communities of color” and would “normalize unconstitutional policing practices” targeting people for how they look, where they live, or what language they speak.
Both responses followed an emergency September 8 Supreme Court ruling in which the Court voted 6–3 to lift a lower court order that had barred Immigration and Customs Enforcement from making stops in Los Angeles using the aforementioned criteria. The decision permits the Trump administration to resume considering those criteria as part of the basis for determining reasonable suspicion while a constitutional challenge to the practice continues in the lower courts.
In its post, the Green Party also linked to the Social Justice plank of its platform, specifically the section outlining pathways to citizenship. The plank cites economic exploitation, political instability, and climate change as ongoing causes of migration, and affirms the party’s goal of a world in which people can freely choose to live and work in any country, with reciprocity between nations.
