Independent U.S. Senate Candidate Seth Bodnar Discusses Healthcare Costs, Immigration in New Interview

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Seth Bodnar said Montana needs a senator independent of both major parties while calling for lower healthcare costs and more humane immigration enforcement in a new interview with Montana Public Radio.

MTPR’s Austin Amestoy interviewed Bodnar, the former president of the University of Montana, as part of the outlet’s 2026 candidate interview series earlier this month. Bodnar said Montana needs a senator who is not a “foot soldier” for either major party and pointed to his military service, university work, and experience bringing together Republicans, Democrats, and independents as part of his case for running as an independent.

In the interview, Bodnar addressed healthcare costs, saying Congress should lower prescription drug prices and reduce “inefficiencies in the system,” while also criticizing federal legislation he said could cause thousands of Montanans to lose coverage and strain rural hospitals. On immigration, he supported strong borders and enforcement of immigration laws, but argued that those efforts should not come at the expense of individual liberties.
