Dan Halloran ran for office as a fusion candidate with the Conservative, Libertarian, and Republican Parties. In addition, he attended the 2010 Libertarian National Convention and has spoken before the Queens LP in the past.
- The Councilman recently took a trip to Bulgaria at the behest of the center-right Law, Order, and Justice Party. Giving a speech at a party event, he also took the opportunity to meet with (and critique) the American ambassador and leave the Prime Minister a New York City Council Ethics Manual.
- Halloran is causing a stir on the Council email list.
The flare-up started when Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-East Harlem) asked colleagues to support the upcoming parole hearing of Puerto Rican radical Oscar Lopez Rivera, a leader of the violent FALN…
“Mr. Lopez was arrested in 1981 and is serving a sentence of 70 years for seditious conspiracy, for his commitment to the independence of Puerto Rico,” Mark-Viverito wrote in an email to Council members Tuesday night.
Lopez Rivera’s 29 years in prison is enough, Mark-Viverito wrote, adding: “He was not accused of causing harm or taking a life.”
Queens Republican Dan Halloran went ballistic. He said his “jaw hit the ground” when he read the note.
“I couldn’t believe that somebody could seriously say that FALN was a non-violent organization,” he said, noting its ties to a series of bombings in New York and Chicago.
He dashed off a skewering response that he copied to every member of the 51-person Council.
“This terrorist, like all terrorists, should rot in jail forever,” he wrote. “It is only a shame the death penalty was not imposed to prevent him from becoming a threat in the future… I guess the 9-11 bombers could make the same argument. They were merely responding to the ‘evils’ of the U.S. Will you be asking for them to be pardoned too?”
The encounter prompted the New York Post to editorialize in support of Halloran.
- As New England continues to be pounded by snow (something I can empathize with in the Twin Cities!), the City Councilman is teaming up with Democratic Assemblyman Edward Braunstein to ensure Queens residents receive timely snow clearing.
- It seems like Halloran won’t be getting a promotion in the immediate future. Contrary to speculation, Queens DA Richard Brown will not be retiring anytime soon. The City Councilman was widely anticipated to be the GOP nominee if such a position opened up.

Daniel Surman, yes he was on the ballot on the IP line — we carried petitions for him. Queens IP has over 26,000 registrants, and a constituted county committee with more than 900 members. [I’m the Treasurer of the Queens Independence Party]

Nancy – can you explain to me the advantage of nonpartisan elections? It seems to me that parties and factions are still part of the process, even when their names aren’t on the ballot.

I am fairly certain he is an advocate of fusion, like Dr. Paul. It would explain his active participation in both parties.

That is not generous. He knows the third party/independents will lose. Why not say you support their participation in elections?
